I watched Anjaam a few days ago and holy shit it’s lowkey a masterpiece. I think that in all honesty, it’s the kind of film i expected Darr to be. I wanted to compare the two films here, and make a separate post about Anjaam itself.
I really enjoy the contrast between the two characters. Rahul Mehra is sort of already mentally ill, I mean the guy talks to his dead mother for a good portion of the film itself. He’s very shy, and is sort of in his own world—as his father said “ever since the death of his mother”.
However, Vijay Agnihotri has no reason to feel the way he does, or act the way he did. He comes from a stable family, and has parents who love him very much. What drove him to the brink of insanity was simply coming to realize that the person he wanted was someone he could not have.
Vijay compared to Rahul quickly grew hateful and violent towards others, including Shivani. This is fueled by his rejection sensitivity. He does not like hearing a no. Meanwhile, Rahul was constantly trying to convince himself that these people were good to him, even if they were directly wronging him by interfering with his plans to acquire Kiran’s love.
Anjaam as a film is themed around “consequences”, and I view it as a critique really, of both how society treats women. Darr is more of a gentle version of Anjaam, and has a happy ending as one would want. Both films are phenomenal in their respective manners, and I do enjoy them a lot.
