This is our final film. We animated the sequence together using the animatic I made. The whole animation was done on one sheet of A1 paper, using rub out technique. I am pleased with the outcome and had a great time making the film with my new film and TV friend.
Our second project was ‘Animated Reality’ which was collaborative with Film and TV. I got on really well with my partner Clara and at first we decided to make a sort of mockumentary about the Mackenzie poltergeist who is based in Greyfriars Kirkyard. This is a test we put together from footage of the graveyard portraying the atmosphere we wanted to start our film.
Animated Reality: Final Edit
After gathering our milk and ink footage, Mollie and I decided to play about with it in After Effects to see if we could create some nice effects to resemble the work of Oskar Fischinger and Jordan Belson.
With Mollie by my side, I tried animating various parts of our footage based on our research but we found that it was not having the same effect when paired with the audio as the original, raw footage of the milk and food colouring. The visuals became too clunky and didn’t flow as nicely.
After concluding that the animation wasn’t really doing anything to benefit the film’s visuals, we decided to make a cut in which we just used the raw milk-in-water footage and played it alongside the audio. This gave the film a great atmosphere of mystery and really allowed us to focus on the words being spoken to us by the disembodied voices - our classmates and tutors agreed with this.
A couple of days later, we met again to polish up the visuals by smoothing out the transitions and Mollie met up with her sound tutor to clean up the background noise and dialogue in the audio.
All we had left to do was decide on a name for our film - we didn’t want to make it pretentious and we didn’t want to ruin the air of mystery about our film, so we came up with a list of potential names:
Enigma
Thoughts
Semblance
Introspection
Rumination
Interpretation
In the end, we made a decision and are very happy with our choice. I shall upload our final cut as soon as we have screened it at our final crit!
