Paedophile jailed for life after murder and rape of teenage girls in 1970s
A man described as "one of the most prolific killers of the modern age" has been jailed for life for a notorious double murder in 1977. Angus Sinclair, 69, was convicted of the so-called "World's End" murders in which he killed 17 year-olds Helen Scott and Christine Eadie. He was jailed for life this afternoon, and ordered to spend at least 37 years behind bars. Sinclair had met his victims in Edinburgh's "World's End" pub before raping and strangling them.
He's a calculating individual, sexually-motivated and extremely cruel. He's certainly one of the most evil individuals there's ever been in criminal history in Scotland.
Allan Jones, a retired Detective Superintendent who investigated the World's End murders, speaking to Sky News
He is the first person north of the border to be tried for the same crime twice after Scotland scrapped its double jeopardy law. Detectives have told Sky News they believe that he is a serial killer who is responsible for at least six other unsolved murders. He was convicted of acting along with his brother-in-law Gordon Hamilton, who died in 1996. Sinclair was in jail when detectives finally caught up with him, having first killed when he was 16. Between 1978 and 1982, he raped and indecently assaulted a number of children across Glasgow.
It was terrible hearing of Helen's last moments. I just cringe at what she must have gone through, the pain she suffered … it's unbelievable.
Morain Scott, father of Helen, speaking to Sky News about the 37-year search for justice.
