I'll try but it's only what I think it means. Alrighty, so...The Marbled Swarm was not marketed as genre fiction, and it was not written with the intent of being genre fiction because Cooper has mentioned several times his aversion to formula (note the metanarrative aside of the narrator after his young brother Alfonse’s death, the disdain for plot points; and then note how radical a departure every book Cooper releases is, from the previous book) and I can only guess from having read the entirety of the George Miles Cycle, all the post-Cycle novels, and all the short story and poetry collections except for Idols and Wolves...this author writes against any consolidation of anything. You can't see it, but I paused typing to claw my hands at the air in frog-lipped irritation. The George Miles Cycle had this through-line of being a relentless deconstruction of language and words, and the futility of communication and connectedness that we don't stop yearning for and needing despite the futility. “Saying love is like yelling ‘ouch!’ when something should hurt but doesn't.” That's the Dennis Cooper Literary & Cinematic Universe to me, if I could only quote one sentence from it all.
The Marbled Swarm as the title and the thing in the book about this thing continues to pose as a deconstruction of language.
It starts out sounding like this magic incantation or knowledge of specific magic words that, if you are a wealthy posh person with loyal (if evil) friends in social circles, can use the Marbled Swarm to compel a person to do what you say...but the quality is affected by what accents and habits you picked up on in your formative years...and the person you have targeted to do what you say, might still do the wrong thing if they heard you wrong... So I'm reading all this and going “One plus one plus one plus... bitch did he mean language??” These are all the features that ordinary language has! This insufferable narrator just said it fancy.
That was The Marbled Swarm, I have no commentary or interpretation to add, nothing more to read here:
But if we're going to start anywhere that isn't linguistic quicksand, then I'm going to say that I as a reader approached The Marble Swarm as though it were a Gothic genre text, which was why I started off proposing genre. Qualifications: the narrator never shuts up about architecture, there's overwhelming emotion or melodrama, the past very insistently haunts the narrative, there's transgressive themes, and maybe there's magic. Disqualifications: This was not published between 1750 and 1930, it's not in response to collective wartime anxieties or traumas, and it lacks the wayward-wandering nightgown girl with the candelabra.
In the body of works that form this particular genre, note also the devices of metaphor (easy enough, we all learned this by 4th grade. If I say “I Wished by Dennis Cooper is an irradiated mushroom cloud of bereavement” that is not true, it is a book and not the cloud left by an atomic bomb, and bereavement is not a book nor is it a bomb, but I speak metaphorically to describe the emotional overwhelm that I Wished evokes as a text,) and metonymy (this is difficult for me to describe because as I understand it's kinda like a metaphor but with fewer steps, but I would argue The Marbled Swarm has more metonymy than it does metaphor. Conversationally, metonymy refers to a figurehead that is understood to include more than what it is: “the crown” to mean monarchy as a system of governance, for example. In literature, I suspect that metonymy is a continuous parallel between a character and/or idea in the story, and its parallel recurring motif/symbolism.)
In The Marbled Swarm, I think that Cannibalism is a metaphor for Incest at the same time that Incest is a metaphor for Cannibalism, therefore nothing is literal, it's all concentrated to this singularity of insularity. It becomes a metonymy for nothing but itself.
Unlike other novels in the Cooperverse there is no distance between people to angst about in The Marbled Swarm because there is no freedom.
Because “everything is a metaphor for everything else, and nothing is literal” it becomes metonymy that collapses into plain ol’ meta: legends of the serial killer who collected and hid the bodies at the narrator's newly-purchased château, the “prophetic” improv theater that Claude and Serge got put through... Stories open up a new world of imagination that might allow for some distance, but the imagination is limited by what the imaginer has already experienced of the world. This has turned the narrator's “escape” into a horrible place.
I think the anecdote at the very end, the one the narrator promised us readers would make us feel so sorry for him when we understand his personal trauma that led him to serial murder and torture and cannibalism and pederasty—the one that, (I think it's implied,) if we don't forgive him, at least we should understand from reading about it that this narrator is a tragic figure that couldn't have done anything else with his life because of that specific thing that happened to him—that might have been the only thing in this whole book that “‘really’ ‘happened’” to the character.
Because if that's what happened to him as a kid, and then he grew up and went on to do all that other horrible stuff, then by now it's awfully banal: all serial killers were one (1) hug deficient from some mother figure, all rapists were molested when they were too young to fight back, and blah blah pop-psychology blah.
But if that's what happened to him as a kid, and then he grew up and went on to imagine all that other horrible stuff and tell it as a story to us, then the metonymy of it all becomes metaphors for how violated and trapped this narrator felt as a child.
Or maybe it was a work attempting to raise alarms back in 2011 about wealthy well-connected echelons of people who eat babies and make any would-be whistleblowers disappear.

woke up at 3am, spent half of my flight having an anxiety attack, pulled out my secret stash jellycat fox and immediately get pulled into the weirdest convo with a blonde bi autistic pagan guy who works for the army and used to do drugs but is unfortunately endearing bc he told me he had a stuffed possum in his bag, i land and my connecting flight is delayed so now i have four hours in airport limbo, anxiety calms down only for me to have a near meltdown bc airport food sucks, and then a group of like 30 little boys and girls on sports teams are at my gate probably on my plane. and when i land at 3:30 we have a three hour drive to [redacted]. okay.
one day you just wake up to 30 dms from your mutual across the world and they're like imagine if these characters were trapped in bikini bottom and they had to fuck or die and you're like, yeah tell me more
ilya in the show: uses less contractions than native english speakers, drops his articles, uses filler words sometimes when searching for proper phrasing

the problem with autism is sometimes you want to do something (brave) but you need someone to gently walk you through each step so you know what will happen. and people don’t like doing that
i need somewhere to be crazy so just don’t even worry about it and skip this post thanks
i have GOT to stop engaging with fucked up content bc i watched like five true crime docs and each of them was disturbing (THIS JUST IN: PEOPLE ARE EVIL????) (maternal instinct was crazy but the chesire murders was…….haunting) but anyway that led me to the marbled swarm book which is, and i cannot stress this enough, so fucked up. and yet the whole time reading it i was like ijbol what do you mean this guy saw his actor dad whom he looks almost identical to in a movie acting as a cannibal and that turned the mc on to both cannibalism and incest like that’s hilarious! (it is not) (and also the mc is so weird bc he’s somehow a sexual pervert and yet i do think he’s some level of fucked up aspec???? compelling. but why do all the perverts and trauma victims end up being aspec i wanna know.) and the worst part is that i can’t even like DISCUSS with anybody bc i cannot recommend my friends read the book about *checks notes* a guy who wants to be a 2D flat stanley who gets raped to death and then has his corpse SMASHED like a potato so as to actually be at flatso . not to mention the book is written in the weirdest most pretentious voice of all time like if holden caufield was a real pervert and also he was lemony snicket??? and yet!!!! deeply compelling bc like this guy and his “friends” are so insane!!? what are they gonna do next!!!!!! and also the mc might be lying!!!!! who knows!!!!!! like i genuinely think i should reread it on paperback so i can dissect the language but if i owned this book i feel like the government would one day find it in my house and kill me for it like….what the fuck guys

idk guys sometimes you just have to accept a ship dynamic is unhealthy, insane, and sometimes abusive. and its not real people so those factors just make it interesting
please stop unfolding the origami crane and smoothing it out bc you got worried the paper was hurting from the bends
okay see i don't want to be a dick because i'm not saying you're entirely wrong- showing abusive relationships and clarifying that they're abusive in media does help people recognize abuse in real life. it's probably a really good thing to include in media aimed at kids or 'family viewing'. but that's not what my post is about and it's not the only reason to write abusive fucked up relationships, and acting like it is flattens stories in a way that is ultimately really bad. and you're completely misinterpreting my post if you think the point of it was sometimes we should include Bad Relationships so Kids At Home Will Know Its Bad.
my point was that sometimes it is interesting to read about or write about really weird unhealthy relationships. not educational.
I don't think an author should have to preface their gothic horror with "and of course, fucking a guy whos secretly your cousin and maybe killed your mom is bad and i disavow". i don't think every fanfic that decides to make the love interest a rapist should end with "and he goes to jail, because that was a Bad Thing to Do, and the victim of his behavior went to therapy and got help dealing with the ramifications".
It's fictional. It's not real. It's not a PSA. sometimes the point is to deconstruct the viewpoint of a rapist who doesn't know they're a rapist. sometimes it's exploring how codependent two characters can get if you put them in a jigsaw trap and tie their legs together. sometimes the point is the author thinks it's sexy to imagine getting fucked at knifepoint. sometimes its literally just this:
or to put it much much shorter and continue the metaphor of the original post.
please stop demanding an artist justify why they'd make an origami tiger and that they better publicly state they know that real tigers are dangerous. that the only reason to make an origami tiger is so that you can show it to people so they know what a tiger looks like and they know they're dangerous so they never go near a real tiger!
