Gay. That’s it. That’s my opinion. 

Okay I’m joking. My opinion on them as a pairing is that what they had was definitely more than friendship. Charlize has argued that they were strictly written to be friends in the first film, but she has claimed that that may just as well change in the sequel. In the comics, it is made abundantly clear that Andy and Quynh (Noriko) love each other beyond belief. That is all I’m going to say in regards to the comics in case you would like to avoid spoilers for the potential sequel. However, it is important to note that the two characters, at their core, were not written to be just friends and in doing that, and therefore potentially erasing their romantic past with each other in the film, would take away a lot of the weight of Quynh’s suffering. 

From Quynh’s perspective, it is not Andy’s fault that she wound up in that situation, that the two women were parted, or that Quynh was locked in an iron maiden and dumped at the bottom of the ocean in an unknown location. However, Andy and Quynh had always had this promise between them. That it was always going to be the two of them against the world, the two of them against any challenge, against even death itself. 

As the viewers/readers we know that Andy looked for Quynh for a few decades until she eventually gave up. I personally think Quynh would take issue with this piece of information. I think what must have kept Quynh going all these centuries dying over and over again was the thought that Andy would never stop looking, that she would drain the world of all its water until she found Quynh. To Quynh, Andy must have given up way too quickly, way too easily. And the reason that I say that is because by the time we see Quynh again, in Booker’ home, she already looks angered and motivated to get her revenge. Although it is worth noting that the acting in the scene is fantastic and Veronica delivers a cold, spine-chilling performance in just the 3 seconds she is on the screen. Quynh has had a lot of time to think, in between waking up and dying once again. Even from the time that she was somehow saved, or escaped the iron maiden herself, until we find her in Booker’s home in France she thought of what it meant that Andy still hasn’t found her, to this day. She sees that Andy stopped. And to Quynh, this is probably something she never would’ve done.
