The solo debut by Iggy Pop was released on 18 March 1977 to mostly ambivalent reviews and mediocre sales (although it spent 13 weeks on the US charts, peaking at #72).
The lack of credits on the record have led to disagreements over who exactly wrote what and who played what on the songs, but in general Pop wrote the lyrics and David Bowie wrote the music, although those roles were reversed on some songs (e.g. “Dum Dum Boys”). Guitarist Carlos Alomar is also credited with co-writing “Sister Moonlight.” Bowie and Tony Visconti produced the recording sessions, with Visconti providing the final mix of the album, which he described as "more of a salvage job than a creative mixing.”

The record was found on Ian Curtis’s turntable when he hanged himself on 18 May 1980.
