Prompt: Hawke giving Anders an earful after hearing him call Fenris an animal/wild dog etc one too many times
“I know it’s not my place to criticize, but--”
“You’re right, it’s not,” Hawke says, because he absolutely knows what this is about. Leave it to Anders--sickeningly sweet, manipulative Anders--to twist this trip (a favor to him, scraping shit off the walls for Maker knows) into an intervention about who he chooses to be intimate with. If he was not a better man, perhaps he would spend more time describing in lurid detail what it’s like to make love to Fenris. But he won’t. He’s better.
Anders glowers, and continues against his good judgment. “--But are you sure about Fenris? He seems less a man to me than a wild dog.”
Fenris quietly walks beside Hawke, almost close enough to brush fingertips, his elven ears piqued as he listens. He does not speak, perhaps used to being talked about as if he is not there.
“Anders, eyes ahead, mouth shut. Thanks.”
“He has let one bad experience color his whole world. Surely you want someone more open-minded?”
“Oh?” Hawke wonders in thinly-veiled sarcasm. “Who could that be?”
“I’m just saying, when that beast finally turns on you, you’ll regret it.”
“A mage and a hypocrite,” Fenris mutters, gazing at him from the corner of his eye. “What company you keep.”
Hawke quite agrees with the sentiment, to be perfectly honest. Once again, he attempts silence, seeing as that is the only condition under which his particular companions can operate in peace.
“Fine, whatever you see in a maniac like that,” Anders says darkly. “Perhaps at least your hand will tame him.”
As opposed to whose?
Fenris visibly flinches and Hawke decides the last line has been crossed.
“How dare you ever even suggest that I would--” Hawke rounds on him, marches to him, throws back his fist and punches him in the face. This, finally, startles Anders into shutting his mouth. “For fuck’s sake, Anders, Fenris is not and has never been a threat to you because there is nothing between you and I. You think I don’t know why you do this? Why you antagonize him and fill his head with bullshit it’s already been filled with? You’re jealous. And selfish. You think I look too kindly on him but to tell the truth, you have an ugly personality, an ugly heart, and you’d have no chance even if I wasn’t in love with him.”
Anders’ face, cold and unfeeling, does not change for the duration of Hawke’s ranting--until that last bit.
“Don’t talk to him again. Don’t look at him again. If you’re in trouble, I’ll always be here and you know where to find me, but as far as I’m concerned I have no need for someone who doesn’t respect him. You’re on your own. Fuck you.”
