😘 April 5th is the 3 year anniversary of my friend Jeanne’s passage—I was privileged enough to work with her for almost 10 years, and in that time, she taught me a lot about what our purpose should be: to care for others, to do something good for ourselves and the earth, to have fun and not take ourselves too seriously. Real talk time. The other day in conversation a friend told me her doctor asked if she was still having periods - and she was super offended. The comment kind of bothered me for a while. I'm the youngest woman my surgeon has ever preformed a hysterectomy on, and right now at a very early stage in my life, I find myself going through menopause. It's been challenging coming to terms with the physical aspects of it - but even more so to realize how it's viewed by so many other women. Women don't want to be associated with it and it's something we change the subject about REAL quick. It's shameful for some reason. So many women seem to equate menopause with aging, and aging in our society seems to be seen as some sort of failure. We can't win, can we? We feel fear confusion and shame when we enter puberty, deal with a constant cycle of pain monthly for our adult lives, and then for some crazy reason feel even MORE shame when menopause hits and out periods are finally over. Why do we let society do this to us? It's something we need to think about for ourselves and talk about with each other. Ladies, our bodies are terrible wonderful magical monsters. I'm trapped in this one and the store has a no-returns policy.
