This makes me FURIOUS. I completely understand the need for marketing, and I am a huge supporter of marketing. It was my career before covid and is something I am wildly passionate about. But this is just dirty business. 1. These types of groups are meant for authors to market their books to reviewers and other authors. 2. If an author is interested in building a leads list, they will not buy one from some random stranger in the internet. 3. Majority of the authors in these groups are actually building their leads list from the connections they make within the groups. Actual connections. Not just some names on a list that probably don’t want to be bothered in the first place. 4. Selling a leads list with however many names won’t do an author any good if the people on the list aren’t interested in their product. If I get spammed from someone I don’t know and have no interest in, I delete the message and mark the sender as spam. Do not just start pushing marketing on people. 5. Authors work their asses off to build their leads list... and an author may only have five people on that list today, but with smart marketing and strong engagement, and a good book, that list will double as those five people start telling others about the author. Do not target authors (or anyone) in this manner. If you can’t contribute to the growth and success of an author by reading and reviewing the book- just keep scrolling. How does rubbish make its way to the ocean? One way is to drop a piece of plastic in your local park and fail to pick it up.
