Do you think that Grian and Gem found Pearl’s dogs wandering around looking for their owner.
The dogs get so excited when they see their owner’s friends, because they must know where she is. But instead they drop to their knees in front of the dogs and collapse into sobs because they’re the last living link to Pearl they’ve got left.
The silly bone-shaped dog tags that Pearl insisted she needed to spend iron on are still hanging on their necks, and if they look close enough, they can see her reflection behind them, just close enough to see them grieve, but far enough away that her voice can’t be heard over their sobs.
