in the totk trailer, we see the strange robot-like enemy chopping a tree
i firmly believe that these are the same ancient robots that were featured in skyward sword, or at the very least based off them. we know they're zonai in build, since they drop zonai pieces. i have a few working theories
theyre the same ancient robots from skyward sword, but because their technology is so old they were rebuilt by the zonai using zonai tech. the zonai, although being described as "barbarians", managed to build some of the craziest ruins in the game. they were definitely more than barbarians
sort of like 1, but the zonai being linked to pre-skyward sword civilization on the surface. hylians have existed for tens of thousands of years, as have other species. why not the zonai? perhaps the ancient tech of the robots is more familiar to the zonai than it is to hylians. by the time link in SS found the robots, they were already rusted and pretty much gone. he had to use a timestone to bring the area back who knows how many years just so that they could keep working. SOMEONE had to have built them, some civilization with enough working knowledge that could build complicated robotic beings had to have existed for several hundred if not thousands of years already.
they're not the same as the SS robots, but instead are rebuilt in their image. perhaps the legend of them was passed down orally, and whatever societies of zonai existed pre-BOTW built them based off old legends using their own technology.

does anyone think it’s weird there were NO ancient robots in Lanayru Mining Facility?
Think about it. Robot carcasses are all throughout Lanayru Desert and Sandsea, but in Lanayru Mining Facility, the place where probably thousands of robots worked, has none.

So I’m not, like, a Zelda FAN, but I’ve played a few. They’re fun. Skyward Sword was not my favorite-I might say it’s my least favorite, really-but it did have the Ancient Robots:
How are they NOT adorable? Look at them! They’re precious! (Did I come down on the Bokoblins harassing them like the Avenging Angel of Retail Workers? Yeah. Fuck those Bokoblins.)
So I made one for myself.
Ancient Robot LD-301L (my name starts with L, I’M CLEVER OKAY) is made with felt. He stands at nearly two feet tall and is entirely done by hand; no machine, no glue, zilch. Hand-stitched, every bit of him, INCLUDING his googly eye; those come in sew-ons now, apparently. I did not have a pattern, he’s 90% freehand and 10% ‘arrange tape measure in shape, trace, hope it works’. He took me about two weeks, and he’s been a nice distraction from my asthma flare (I’m fine, but it’s been windy and I have been SUFFERING).

today I was finishing up the Sandship yet another time, and after I got the Sacred Flame and everything, I went back to the Sandship to talk to all the robots there (because it’s very much worthwhile to do so). I went through the engine room to the little area with the five treasure chests, and talked to the robot there, and he said, “Our treasure is gone! Someone stole it, vzzzzrrrrt!” I’m sure Link was just like “OH CRAP that was me hehe” but anyway I want to draw this now

I mean, c'mon. Whilst you are traveling on the surface, aside from Fi's thousands of percentages and Captain Obvious™ statements (don't get me wrong, I still love her) you don't hear much cheerful talk. Yes, you do hear some from the Kikwis, but that's only when they aren't shrieking in fear for their lives. Yes, you do hear some from the Mogmas, when they aren't being rude or talking about treasure. Yes, you do hear some from the ancient robots, when they aren't being depressing talking about how they miss their families and friends and etc. But this guy? Gorko? He's always excited about some new discovery he's made, happily telling Link about it whilst calling him "bud" and being overall very cheerful. He never makes a negative comment and never gets his spirits down. What's more, he gives useful information sometimes, and you see him in multiple areas of the surface aka Hyrule. He's just a nice, huggable character and I always looked forward to meeting him again.
