#Repost @kimbritive ă»ă»ă» We cannot forget how prejudice, white supremacy, and patriarchy have shaped our past and our present -- Dr. Mary T Bassett â â â â â â â â â ----â â â â â â â â â Did you know that cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for women in the United States?â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â Yup. The cervical cancer death rate dropped significantly with the increased use of the pap test, which tests for abnormal changes to your cervix, so you can treat them before cancer develops. The vast majority of cervical cancer cases come from the human papillomavirus, for which there is an effective vaccine. Though this is cause for celebration, the reality is Black women are more than 1.5x as likely to die from cervical cancer as white women. â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â This doesnât just happen out of nowhere though. â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â J Marion Sims, a 19th-century physician who is famously and unjustly dubbed the âfather of modern gynecologyâ developed tools and surgical techniques after experimenting on enslaved Black women and children WITHOUT anesthesia. More specifically, he created the vaginal speculum, which is the tool used during a pap smear to examine cells on the cervix. â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â When you consider these two factors together, itâs no coincidence that Black women have an inherent distrust in the medical system. Racism quite literally prescribes Black women's health disparities and inequities. â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â While we're in the spirit of removing symbols of hate, violence, and bigotry, what we really want to know is: when will symbols of sexual violence, racism, and violence be removed from society? Though the J Marion Sims statue was removed from Central Park in NYC in 2018, his name and âlegacyâ are still upheld by institutions. â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â Instead, weâd like to see a statue of #Anarcha, #Betsey, and #Lucy who were the three known enslaved teenage girls who J Marion Sims routinely experimented on. â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â Pictured above are Darializa Auila-Chevalier and Jewel Cadet at a BYP100 NYC chapter action for the removal of the J. Marion Sims statue outside of Central Park. â â â â â â â â â .â â â â â â â â â .â â â â â â â â â . https://www.instagram.com/p/CBQpNeWJArbesSfWXajSoYFLTIqMwjP3OUYB9s0/?igshid=bbh4zwhlwaif
