what is your favourite cab of alltime and why?
I've thought about this all morning (because what better do I have to do on Easter Sunday) and I really cannot narrow it down, so here's my take on pros and cons of some of my favorites.
+ In terms of being visually arresting, Emperor's gotta take the cake - not only because of the stained-wood-instead-of-tolex aesthetic, but also the sheer amount of possibilities and speaker configurations. Not to mention they sound nasty.- I would love one of them divided 6x12"s, but man, what a bitch to move. I'd sooner take a concert grand piano on tour. Probably cheaper, too.
+ Electric makes really nice-sounding, nice-looking cabs as well. Solid construction.- Also disarmingly expensive. Limited impedance options.
+ Never heard a Sunn cab I didn't like, especially their 2x15"s.- Vintage cabs with vintage speakers often have trouble handling the wattage of modern amps. Usually hard to carry as well; you end up with one shitty handle on one side or something.
+ For bass, Ampegs are hard to beat - especially if you reinforce the vintage stuff (B-25s, etc.) with higher-powered speakers.- Many are hard to transport. For example, 6x10"s are perfect, but the 8x10" "fridge" is a nightmare and 4x10"s aren't usually efficient enough for live settings. And the old oversized V-2 4x12"s? Forget about it.
+ I've got a Marshall 1960 hanging around the studio that's my go-to for guitar tracking. Nicely balanced, pushes some serious volume.- Super cliche.
