The most surreal part about being inside of the Hunger Games again is the fact that you’re not alone. As in, you’re not the only victor inside of this arena, you’re not the only person that had fought tooth and nail to win before. Right now, there are fifteen other victors somewhere in this arena.

All of them have their own alliances, held together by shitty glue. No one is a stranger to the idea of betrayal. You’re sure that most of the people in here have done it before, themselves. Not to name names or anything, but Peeta, Johanna, Enobaria… All it would take to break them apart is a little bit of paranoia come true.

It’s one of the reasons why you decided to ride as solo as possible. Having alliances are nice and all, but they stop being worth it when no one is getting along. That’s something you’re experienced in, yourself. In your games, you watched as your allies picked each other apart until a fight broke out and they were killed in an hour.

It helped you towards your win. Of course, the timing of it was shitty, since the careers had been picking off tributes left and right. If you didn’t know any better, you’d say that your games were one of the fastest to be completed, in and out. Even the careers didn’t have any interest in dragging it out to their loyal sponsors, the Capitol.

However, despite your best attempts, you ran across an alliance a little less than an hour ago. Considering the way you found them, you’re surprised you’re still alive and on your own two feet. Johanna Mason has never been the friendliest of victor's you met, and she’s a vicious mentor that you can hardly stand to be around.

That combined with the fact that she’s protecting the victor’s from Three, Wiress and Beetee, nearly ended in bloodshed. She thought you’d been the careers, or hunting them all day. You didn’t realize that the path you were following belonged to humans and not animals. The only reason why you made it out is because of Blight, who stepped in before it could get ugly.

Once your intentions were clear that you weren’t there to kill them, she lightened up somewhat. She knows you, even if it’s not super well. And it was clear that she trusted you, especially when she asked that if you came across Finnick while wandering, to bring him and the others to her.

You agreed because, well, you have nothing better to do. Hopefully they’ll give you something out of it. Johanna and them haven’t found water, so you’re hoping that the sea god himself will have found something while wandering with his followers. Also, it’s not like you can kill them or anything. You grabbed a knife out of the cornucopia before it got too risky.

You’ve already been wandering for a little while now, you’re not going to be finding them anytime soon. This arena is huge, you probably haven’t even covered a good fraction of it yet. And the chances of running into one group after the other? Your luck has to be horrible for that to happen.

And horrible it is.

It’s an accident when you step on the branch, and it’s horror that fills your body when you see a handmade hut in front of you. All you can do is freeze as not one, but two bodies emerge from the entrance, weapons pointed in your direction.

Your hands fly up in surrender, just like how you’d done it for Johanna and Blight. You can’t tell who’s in front of you, is it the careers or some other horrifying group that you didn’t realize formed in the Capitol?

It takes you squinting and blinking and forcing the moonlight to work until you see who it is, Finnick and Katniss. Finnick is prepared to throw his trident, Katniss has an arrow aimed directly at you. You’ve seen how fast she can move, and you know that you can’t be quicker than that. You could jerk to the left and she’d already readjust and shoot.

You clear your throat, there’s no point in pretending you’re not here, “Well, this isn’t a sight I expected to see. The Boy from the Sea and the Girl on Fire. How is it possible you haven’t killed each other yet?”

If Katniss and Finnick are here, then so are Peeta and Mags. You’re guessing that they’re still inside of the hut. Were they instructed to stay there or do they not realize that half their alliance just left their presence?

“Walk forward.” Finnick’s voice is measured.

You do, not wanting to get shot or stabbed. As soon as you find a patch of light, you stop, allowing them to look you over. They don’t relax at all, you can’t blame them for it. As you’ve discovered, there’s nothing more unnerving than having someone stumble into your bubble. Or worse, being the person that stumbled.

You smile, and then let it fall. It’s probably not helping the situation any.

“How did you find us?”

“It wasn’t on purpose, trust me. You think I’d be stupid enough to try and attack you?” you ask, they look apprehensive.

Finnick is watching you, moving at all your little movements. He doesn’t trust you, neither does Katniss. Katniss you can understand, she doesn’t know you, or anyone else in this arena besides her husband, for the matter. Finnick is weird, though, because he’s seen you around Johanna in passing. And you can swear that you’ve had a few conversations with him, too.

Finnick starts towards you, your eyebrows twitch together in confusion. You relax, though, figuring this is the part where he gives up the act of being hostile. Then he grabs a hold of your arm and flips your entire body over, back slamming into the dirt, rocks and roots weaving in and out of the ground.

The air leaves your lungs, you can feel every little rock that hits your back the wrong way. For a moment, you swear you’re going to black out, but adrenaline hits your body as soon as Finnick hovers his trident over your throat.

“Why are you here?”

“Why are you here?” you shoot back the question, face twisted in pain, “For fuck’s sake, I was just finding a place to stay for the night. No need to kill me for it.”

He deadpans, “It’s the Hunger Games.”

“So? You’re standing next to the person who scored a twelve on her training. I’m sure I’m the least of your worries.”

Well, that’s not entirely true. You scored a ten this time around, you had months to prepare for the Hunger Games this time, since you knew it was coming. There was a slim chance that you weren’t going to get picked, and you weren’t just going to play roulette with the odds.

His eyes lower into a squint.

“I’m sorry, okay? Just, don’t kill me. I’ll go back down to the beach or something.” you sigh, you know you have to tell him about Johanna and Blight sometime, but seeing him so uptight like this is a little funny. It’s Finnick, you’re so used to seeing him smile and fuck around with people. You suppose he doesn’t like having the same done back to him.

Finnick doesn’t budge.

“Come on, aren’t we friends? We got drinks together once, you can’t go back after that.”

Now he’s lenient, backing off of you slightly, “Fine, but you’re leaving.”

“Sure,” you take his hand, getting ready to get up, “Although, I’m surprised you’re taking a risk like this at all, since I could easily come back and kill you--”

He drops you back onto the ground, “That’s it, I’m killing you anyway.”

In the face of death, watching as Finnick rises the trident to bring down, you can’t hold in your laughter. He’s about halfway through the movement before he stops, face twisting as he stares down at you.

“I’m just fucking with you,” you laugh, “Johanna and Blight asked me to find you guys and bring you their way. They have Beetee and Wiress with them, do you wanna go or not?”

“Katniss?” a groggy voice asks, it must belong to Peeta.

Finnick is staring at you blankly, Katniss isn’t moving from where she stands. Peeta comes out of the hut, rubbing his eyes, holding a machete. It takes him a moment to look over the scene in front of him before realizing what’s happening. He goes rigid.

You grin a little at Finnick, “What?”

He takes in a deep breath, and then sighs, “Where are they?”

“A few miles down the way I came. I can bring you to them, they’re behind some rock thing, it’s a little complicated to find. I’m surprised I even managed to do it.”

Finnick backs off, shaking his head. You hold out your hand for him to help you up, but he turns away to go to his alliance to get out of it.

“I see how it is,” you mutter, getting to your feet yourself. You run your fingers through your hair to get out the leaves and dirt.

“How do we even know she’s telling the truth?” Katniss asks, sending a look your way.

“It’s (Y/n).” Finnick says, “She’s kinda friends with Johanna. I wouldn’t be surprised if they set this up beforehand.”

“What if it’s a trap?”

“Then we kill her, I’m sure she doesn’t mind.”

“Fuck you, Finnick.” you roll your eyes, “Are we getting a move on or not?”

They do, Finnick wakes up Mags and brings her out of the hut on his back. You offer up your knife for them to take so they feel safer following you down to where the other half of their alliance is. Katniss walks in the back, arrow loaded onto her bow the entire time, Peeta walks in the middle, Finnick right behind you.

For a while, it stays like that, until Finnick catches up with you enough to walk right next to you, “Do you have a death wish?”

“Huh?” you ask, looking at him briefly.

“Earlier, saying that you’ll kill us?”

“Oh,” the word falls from your lips, “It doesn’t matter to me, it’s not like I’m going home anyway. I could die tonight, or tomorrow morning. It would be a miracle if I won this, and I think I’m all out of them.”

Finnick doesn’t respond.

When you know you’re nearing Johanna’s camp, you go ahead and call for her name. She responds by shouting yours.

“I’ve got your friends!” you say.

She comes out around the rock, eyes landing on the people that you’ve brought her. She lights up, a laugh coming out of her. She hugs you first, squeezing tightly before moving onto Finnick, who slowly sets Mags down on the ground.

“I can’t believe it! (Y/n), you’re amazing.”

“I know,” you smile, watching as Blight comes around to take a look for himself. You raise a hand as a wave, and he gives you an approving nod, “I’ll see you guys later.”

This breaks Johanna and Finnick out of their conversation, Finnick shakes his head, “Stay, you deserve a place in our alliance.”
