The Warrior Queen of Africa
Amina, Queen of Zazzau was a mid-sixteenth century Queen whose life has been braided between legends and folk tales. Amina was daughter of King Nikatau and Queen Bakwa Turunku, though little else is known about her parents. Local oral legends say that Amina mostly grew up in her grandfather’s court, and she was highly favored by him. King Sarkin Nohir would carry her around the palace, and would carefully instruct her on political and military matters. By the time she had turned 16, Amina was declared heir apparent (Magajiya). However, upon her parents’ deaths around 1566, it was her brother that became King.
Amina distinguished herself as a “leading warrior” in her brother’s military, and gained notoriety for her skill. She is still praised today for being “a woman as capable as a man.” Amina ascended the throne as Queen following her brother’s death in 1576. A few months later, the new Queen waged a campaign to expand Zazzau territory, a war that would last over thirty years but was quite successful. It was widely known that her army – over 20,000 strong – was well-trained and fearsome.
Now, Amina was considered quite a desirable would-be wife, and she had many suitors that attempted to gain her hand in marriage, even as a young girl. It was said that men would make daily offers of slaves and cloth in an attempt to woo her. Amina had none of this, and refused to marry. As Queen; however, she was legendary for taking a new lover each night in the towns she conquered. The unfortunate man was then beheaded the following morning. Amina amassed a huge territory, and surrounded her new cities with earthen walls, many of which survive today. Her legend lives on today, and she has become a national heroine in Nigeria.
