fascinating glimpse into the labyrinths of technology tonight
a friend who's doing a queer performance studies MA was wailing because the texts they assigned to him for next week were supplied in pdfs his screen reader couldn't read, so we said "send them to us and we'll see what we can do"
so we got these two pdfs, and one of them was just scanned images from a book, and the other one was at least some kind of real text - but when we tried copying both directly by selecting the text with the mouse on our laptop, they produced utter gobbledygook
so then we had a little brainwave and meticulously saved screenshots of the first one on our phone, and then used its ocr to copy the text, page by page, which worked almost perfectly (ocr hates endnote numbers)
and with the second one, we opened it on our phone and manually selected the text page by page, and that worked fine too
so we made two odt files with the plain text from the pdfs, and his screen reader works fine with all that
but the gobbledygook is really intriguing - look at this:

fortunately it was only 51 pages altogether and only took a couple of hours - but we've asked him to give the college fierce feedback about providing non-accessible reading matter
also we're really glad we don't have to read this, we got a few lines into that first page and it made our teeth bleed

Mon penchant pour l’orangé s’est révélé assez tôt : tête ronde, yeux verts…
J’ai très vite dû composer avec ma tête de citrouille…
Grâce à mon ami imaginaire, lui-même victime de spécificités physiques observables sans effort, nous avons grâce à de nombreux stratagèmes psychiques, surmonté les moqueries des p’tits culs…
Bien évidemment, mon identité était déjà compromise… Pour autant personne ne s’en est inquiété puisque mon grimoire génétique en sorcellerie expliquait l’absence de photographie sur ma carte orange…
En grandissant, mes hormones m’ont joué des tours, la cellulite a fait le reste.
Ma tête de citrouille pouvait désormais converser avec ma peau d’orange….
Ensemble, elles ont refait le monde… Elles ont refait mon monde….
Les compléments supra et méta-physiques de ma personnalité se sont ensuite construits à partir de cela…
Je suis une personnalité multi-ples: amère, sanguine, pressée, acide, sèche, vitaminée, réconfortante, désaltérante…
Bref, en quelques mots juteux : propice aux pépins …
Tantôt je nage dans de la pulpe d’or ange , tantôt je suis confite voire déconfite…
Heureusement, j’ai l’œil vif et caféiné…
Le plus souvent, je sens les problèmes arriver…
J’ai appris à dribbler et pour éviter d’être hors jeu social, quand un entre deux se présente, j’intercepte l’information émotionnelle ressentie et passe à autre chose quelques secondes pour mieux me porter et com-porter.
Sans ruse, j’aurais eu du mal à me connecter aux autres et à surfer nette sur la toile socio-compétitivo, individuo économique….
Pour beaucoup,quand on est une orange pure et pétillante, on secoue les conventions. C’est comme si on mettait un coup de marteau piqueur dans une boutique orange. L’Appe(l)ur gagne du terrain et tout le monde tombe dans les pommes…
Voyez-vous quand on n’est pas assortie, on ne peut apparemment pas avoir la classe…
Je ne suis pas d’accord. Il faut garder la pêche ! Rester à l’abricoté des imbéciles ! Être confuciusement clement-ine même si on est pas mandarin(e) !
Pour ma part, je m’en suis toujours sortie grâce à un zeste d’humour…
Vous savez pourquoi ? Parce que je n’ai jamais oublié que l’orange était une couleur de l’arc-en-ciel….
