I like the thought that Derek's last letter to Avery about the latter being capable of great things & to keep moving forward implies that, with his infinite knowledge, Derek saw a future where Avery will live on to become someone who can do amazing things.
So it'd be entertaining if Derek didn't see any future where he could survive merging with TKIY, so he accepts his fate. Then he wakes up in a hospital room weeks after New Years, confused as hell. And he finds out that by some miracle, Avery saved him.
I like to think that Avery's pure determination to save Derek made the impossible possible, forging a new future where both of them can live, because they deserve to.
I tried to watch them without romantic lenses influencing my experience. then this scene happened.
