“I lied,” she blurted. “The king didn’t choose Aegon. I did.”

Criston paused but barely any surprise registered on him. No tense shoulders, brow unchanged, hands firmly planted on the table.

If Alicent did not know better, she would have thought he knew what she had done all along. He could not have. He was no Larys.

“And you suppose all that’s happened is because of that?” He asked, pushing away from the table.

“If I hadn’t…” Alicent trailed away, clutching her wrists to wring nervously.

“Rhaenyra’s reign would bring chaos and destruction,” Criston pointed out. “You merely counted the cost to the people as a true queen should.”
