Nintendo's Shift From Handheld
With the Big N hoping to makeup for the colossal failure of their sixth console generation, I can’t help but feel like, in leaving the Wii U behind, they have also started to pivot away from one of their biggest strengths, handheld.
Together the Nintendo DS and 3DS account for over 215 million in hardware and over 1 billion software units. These numbers easily beat the massive accomplishment of the original Wii’s 100+ million systems, and downright dwarf the lackluster 14 million on the Wii U.
However, on the eve of the Nintendo Switch’s big reveal, and for the few months since the outrageously good $99 Black Friday special, Nintendo’s dual-screen juggernaut has become impossible to find unless you have an eBay account and the words ‘Tootsie Pop’ written across your forehead.
Go ahead, take a minute. Go try and find one. I’ll wait…
Although there has been no official announcement about leaving the handheld market, it appears that the DS & 3DS’s have become collateral damage in Nintendo’s quest to reclaim home console dominance.
Of course, this could all be chocked up to supply chain and/or manufacturing issues but to me it is shows that Nintendo has all but ceased production on its handhelds for one reason:
The most successful system of all time is quietly being sunsetted to prepare for the future.
Now the fanboy in me that has owned every incarnation of Nintendo, from better (SNES, N64, GBA, DS, & 3DS) to worse (Virtual Boy I am looking at you through the constant migraines and red haze), prays I am wrong. Three months from now I hope we’ll discover Nintendo made a business decision to slow handheld production to enable them to crank out as many Switch’s as possible, but I can’t ignore the signs.
Aside from system availability, with the exception of the phenomenally well received Pokemon Sun & Moon, and ports of recent Wii U releases (Super Mario Maker), the gaming well has begun to dry. Yoshi’s Wooly World and a very un-Pikmin Pikmin game appear to be the only 1st party titles on the DS horizon.
If rumors are to be believed we will see new titles from Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon within the first six months of Switch launch along with countless other 1st and 3rd party titles to follow.
One could hardly blame Nintendo for the shift. Truth be told, another failure on par with the Wii U would devastate the company and risk them being forced from the home console market for good. Though Nintendo has been known to deliver amazing products and experiences when their backs are against the wall, I hope their strategy has not become to throw all of their hanafuda cards behind their newest effort and ignore part of what has sustained them through the previous decade.
Now the flip side is that all of this worrying could be for nothing. Looking back on previous system launches, it would make sense that Nintendo is finally learning from their past and trying to avoid the type of supply issues that dogged the original Wii and DS launches. Hopefully tomorrow’s brave new world does not mean the end of today.
