Happy monday! I have a half hour or so of my music scheduled to go out later today. It's called Spaceship Submarine and it consists of music I've been working on since late last year. It's sort of ambient dnb inspired so if you listen to that while working here's a new mix to start the week off right!
Biopsy#2
Background: I learned about this EP's release from Bb0ii's Tumblr, and I've been eagerly awaiting it since around January 25th. I knew it would be in the breakcore style and such, but I didn't know it would be a very experimental album. Analysis:
I see now is a short intro track that sounds reminiscent of Steve's speech from the game Spore, and I really like the added and enhanced distortion at the end. Garden of Guardian Angels is a track that successfully blends chiptune and breakcore. The track begins with a piano part, followed by a devastating series of chopped drum loops that sound like a jackhammer. The track is pretty cool, but there's something better on this EP. Going NOW is a track that blew me away. There are such drum parts that make an amen break turn into a frantic angle grinder. He amazed me with the production and performance, because before Going NOW I didn’t think that bb0ii could produce such a thing and it pleasantly surprised me. DGSM is a track that's similar to the rest of the tracks on this EP, but in my opinion, it's the weakest of them all. It doesn't have a wow factor because it's similar to the others, but it's still good. SAVIOR OF THE KNOWN is the most magnificent track here. It mixes bb0ii's signature chiptune, ambient, and crazy Amen breaks. The best on the EP, nothing to even say about it. Past Patterns is a skit track featuring a sweet chiptune composition that seems to foreshadow something, and it foreshadows the next, equally awesome track. FUTURE IS BRIGHT (DESPITE EVERYTHING) - I don't know why, but this track reminded me of Salvador Dali's paintings. Specifically, The Persistence of Memory, because the clock in that picture, and the drum parts in this track, are constantly changing, and you can't predict what will happen next. You won't find a single identical moment here. for the foreseen is an outro track that perfectly describes the cover of this wonderful EP. It has a very cosmic and otherworldly vibe. There's some kind of Morse code at the end of the track, who can figure it out ?
Conclusion So, what do we have? Ultimately, we have a wonderful, technically brilliant EP. There are some flaws, but they're minor: the chiptune melodies are monotonous (though that may be a genre characteristic) and there are some tracks that seem to have been crammed in for quantity (though that may just be my impression). Overall score: 76/100 @bb0ii @bb0ii
BIOPSY 1 This is the first installment of the Biopsy series, where I'll be reviewing albums by little-known artists. Today, I'll be looking at Wildcard Operator, an artist whose first EP caught my attention. I stumbled across it on Tumblr, and the cover caught my attention—it was so incomprehensible, so strange, and I wondered what might be hidden behind it. (*) is Wildcard Operator's first major release, featuring seven tracks, which we'll now examine.
"Lysergamide" the EP's opening track , sounds like acid trance, like an alarm. The melodies and the speed of everything happening on the track are reminiscent of some kind of chase. This track is quite addictive. "One Block Until Arcadia" a track that evokes a lot of associations for me. Whether it's some kind of arcade machine in Las Vegas, or it could be the Gravity Falls episode about Rumble McSkirmish, well, overall, the track is pretty cool, if not the best on the album. "Beautiful Goodbye" is a very atypical and very experimental track for the overall album. It's a breakbeat with a breaking rhythm and a soft, gentle piano in the background, with an equally breaking rhythm. My favorite track on the EP. "Hypomania" is a track that fits perfectly with racing games. I really like the transition at 0:30; it's very smooth. The city at night, skyscrapers, you're driving, and this track plays. A great picture. "After Everything" is a great track, very pixelated and straightforward. I really like the cheerful melody and the jaunty snares that match the rhythm. It would be perfect for a Flash game, maybe on Newgrounds. I advise you to upload this track there, maybe it will go into some game. "Hope" is also a great track, very similar in vibe to After Everything. It's similarly pixelated, but while the former track is more suited to moving around a game location, Hope is more about tension and a fighting game scene. "What I've Longed for" is the most rhythmic track on the EP, and the last one on it. It's a really cool track, its speed is noticeable compared to the other tracks on the EP. You can dance to this track quite well; it's true EDM.
Verdict: The tracks have a significant drawback: they all have the same melody and are rather monotonous. The climaxes are practically indistinguishable from other moments, but it's worth noting that Nate is a very promising artist; if he puts in the effort, he'll start producing excellent EDM tracks that are many levels higher. I'm really looking forward to what Nate releases next. Favorite track: Beautiful Goodbye Least favorite: Hope 6/10 [contact: [email protected]] @natealexanderthegreat - tumblr of wildcard operator
