âA speargun,â Dean states, nodding, lips pursed as he swirls his whiskey in the cheap motel-issued cup. âCas, are you sure you know what a speargun is?â
âYes, Dean, I am aware of what a speargun is.â Cas is tired as a celestial being can be. âAnd what I saw in the ghostâsâŚÂ paws was, in fact, a speargun.â
âPaws,â Dean echoes â again â unmoving, seemingly uncaring or engaged in the least.
Castiel sighs and rolls his eyes. âIf youâre going to keep cherry-picking words that come out of my mouth to repeat, we wonât get anywhere with this.â
Dean finally moves, swiping his booted feet from atop the rickety table, careful not to slosh his whiskey from its plastic vessel. âWhere exactly is it you wanna go with this, Cas?âÂ
âGhosts are kind of are your thing, Dean,â Castiel answers impatiently, watching Dean cross the room.
âOK, itâs a ghost,â Dean shrugs. âBut itâs contained, right? In an abandoned asylum.âÂ
âI seem to recall a time you went directly into a haunted asylum for the specific reason that it was haunted-â
Dean holds up a hand in lazy, half-hearted surrender or placation, Castiel isnât sure which.
âLook,â Dean says. âI get that youâre bored, man, but Iâm beat up from todayâs legit case. I just wanna get drunk and pass out.â
Castiel stares at his friend, his brother in arms, the symbol of humanity⌠and all the fight drains from him.Â
Deanâs endured Hell itself, being marked as the symbol of murder, death and subsequent demon-ness. Castiel has witnessed Dean pushed to the brink and come back â not unchanged, but still human, still Dean.
Heâs baffled by Deanâs apparent exhaustion from a simple salt-and-burn, but because heâs seen Dean push his own limits further than any human, demon, or angel Castiel has ever known, he decides to let it rest.
âI mean, itâs not like the thingâs hurtinâ anybody, right?â Dean turns to face Castiel with two plastic cups full of whiskey as he swaggers toward him. âCanât wait one more night?â
The angel sighs and allows a small smile and nods affirmatively as he accepts the proffered whiskey from Dean. âIt can wait one more night,â he answers.
âAwesome,â Dean says as he takes a seat once again and Castiel mirrors his actions.
âHey, did I ever tell you about the time Sammy thought he was Batman and jumped off a roof? I had to take him to the emergency room on my handlebars,â Dean chuckles.
âBut Batman canât fly,â Castiel answers, and Dean laughs harder.
âI know! The best part about the whole thingâŚâ
As Dean continues his telling of the story, Castiel relaxes back into the chair and revels in the lightness of Deanâs voice and mood.
He agrees with himself once again that not going to the asylum tonight was a good idea.
