AM200 Lecture 1: Understanding Mana and the Structure of Spheres
Greetings, students. Today, we embark on a journey through the fundamentals of modern spellcraft; the foundation of all modern theories of arcanism. Our goal today is to deepen your understanding of the nature of mana, the structure of spheres within the soul, and how these concepts lay the groundwork for everything we shall discuss in this course.
1.1 The Nature of Mana
Mana is the lifeblood of magic. It is not a substance or a material, but rather a form of energy that permeates the cosmos, an essential force that allows us to bend the fabric of reality to our will. Every living being possesses the potential to channel this energy, though only those trained in the arcane arts can refine and wield it with intent. Many call this raw form of mana merely “cosmic energy”, or “magical energy”, but in this course, for reasons of simplicity, mana as filtered and stored in a spellcaster’s Sphere will be called merely “mana”, while that which is found naturally in the environment will be called “aether”.
Mana, in its raw form, is chaotic and untamed. In its natural state, it exists in the environment, diffused and latent, ready to be harnessed. However, this raw mana cannot be used directly; it must be refined, filtered, and shaped within the soul of the caster. This is where the concept of a spellcaster’s Spheres comes into play.
1.2 The Spheres: Reservoirs of Power
Imagine, if you will, your soul as a vessel containing a series of nested orbs; each is formed from crystallized mana, and each one is denser than the one which came before it, with all of them orbiting one another in a great, complicated dance to maintain the balance of your soul. These are your Spheres. Each Sphere acts as a reservoir, drawing in raw mana from the environment and refining it into a usable form. With each subsequent Sphere that you add to your soul aperture, the density of mana in your newest sphere grows, producing something more pure and potent; capable of affecting reality to a greater degree than mana pulled from those which came before. For our species, most mages are only capable of balancing, at most, four:
First Sphere (Apprentice): The outermost and least refined sphere. Mana drawn from this sphere is sufficient for basic spells—simple invocations that require minimal manipulation of reality. Think of this sphere as your training ground, where the novice mage first learns to control and direct their power. This is what you were most likely to be experimenting with in my prior course, AM101, assuming you attended it.
Second Sphere (Journeyman): As a mage progresses, they will eventually form their second sphere. This sphere contains mana of higher density, enabling you to perform spells with greater complexity and impact. The difference in density allows for more intricate manipulation of the laws of our reality—think of it as moving from manipulating clay to shaping stone.
Third Sphere (Expert): Reserved for the advanced practitioner, this sphere contains highly refined mana of a much higher density to what came prior. Think of it as the difference between an aged fine wine and a triple- distilled brandy. Spells drawn from this sphere have the potential to significantly alter physical laws, such as manipulating time or bending vast forces within a localized area. However, the power here is immense, and so too is the responsibility and skill required to wield it safely. A misstep at this level can have far-reaching consequences, both for the caster and the world around them.
Fourth Sphere (Master): The Fourth Sphere represents the pinnacle of what human mages can achieve. The mana here is near-pure, an essence so refined that it teeters on the edge of what the mortal form can handle. Spells drawn from this sphere are capable of bending reality in profound ways, touching upon the very fabric of existence, if only for a moment, on a local level. This sphere is not just a tool but a gateway to the deeper mysteries of the cosmos. It is here that the mage must exercise the utmost caution, for the power within the Fourth Sphere is both volatile and complex, requiring a delicate balance of mind, body, and spirit to control. The slightest error could lead to catastrophic results, not just for the caster, but for the world itself.
Understanding the relationship between these spheres is crucial to mastering spellcraft. As you advance in your studies, you will learn to draw from higher spheres, refining your control over more potent forms of mana.
Notes on advanced magics; Spheres beyond the fourth, and transcendence of the mortal frame.
For most humans, the Fourth Sphere is the final threshold—an achievement that few ever reach, and fewer still master. However, there are some beings who have transcended the ordinary limits of mortality, including, at times, the bounds of magical law which we must follow. We call these beings the Ascended. These rare individuals—by shedding their human form—have liberated themselves from their own mortal coils, and stepped into the realm of immortality, if in a bastard- ized form of it. The Deathbound, who walk in death among us, living and breathing members of the dead; the Twisted, who nail the souls of others into their bodies so that they might consume them to grow their souls; or the most rare Divinities, who have claimed a piece of the inheritance of the great creator god, Saryn, with their own hands. But regardless of how they achieve it, it is a proven fact that- among those who practice magic- those beings beyond our simple human existence are capable of making manifest far greater magics than us, and even living to tell the tale.
The Fifth Sphere:The Fifth Sphere is the domain of the Ascended—those who have surpassed the boundaries of normal human existence. The mana contained within this sphere is of an extraordinary density, bordering on the divine. Spells drawn from the Fifth Sphere can affect reality on a grand scale, influencing not just the physical world, but the very threads of fate and destiny. The power at this level is such that it can alter the course of a nation’s history, reshape entire landscapes, or even bridge the gap between life and death. However, the strain on the caster is immense, and only those who have truly transcended their mortal form can harness this power without being consumed by it.
The Sixth Sphere:The Sixth Sphere is the highest tier accessible to naturally immortal beings, such as Dragons and the Kin. This sphere contains mana of an almost incomprehensible purity, a force that resonates with the very essence of creation. Spells drawn from this sphere can rewrite the laws of the universe, touching upon aspects of existence that are normally the province of the Gods. The power here is beyond anything a mortal could hope to control—only beings who are themselves ageless and enduring can wield this mana without shattering their own essence. The Sixth Sphere represents the zenith of magical achievement for even the most ancient and powerful of beings.
The Theoretical Spheres (Divine Arcanum):Beyond the Sixth Sphere lies a realm of power that is purely theoretical for all but the divine. These higher tiers of magic are said to be the domain of the Gods themselves, where mana becomes indistinguishable from the very fabric of reality. Spells at this level are not spells in the traditional sense but acts of creation and destruction on a cosmic scale. No mortal, not even the Ascended or the Dragons, can hope to reach these heights; they are the exclusive province of the divine, where the laws of the universe are written and rewritten at will.
In summary, there are but four spheres which any student in this course has any reason to care about, which set the limits of mortal magic and all modern arcanism; however, these do not represent the zenith of what is possible in the realm of magic. The Fifth tier of magic, as powered by the Fifth Sphere, is the absolute theoretical maximum of what is actually possible for any human mage in our world, and it is only possible by shedding one’s humanity in order to become something other. But there are beings in our world who can access even one stage beyond that, drawing upon the Sixth sphere to touch upon a power that can be described as little short of “Divine”. Humans are not the greatest mages of our world, even if we have the potential to be better than many; be aware of that in your studies, and do not ever attempt to go beyond the bounds we set here, without decades of experience or the luck of a god on your side; for while you may, if you are lucky, form a sphere beyond the fourth while you are still a mortal, the power which it contains could shred your soul, and ever rob you of your promised eternity in the afterlife, while cutting ever short your tenure on this earth as well. That concludes our lecture for today. Any questions?
