excerpt:
If there’s one thing predictable about summer in St. Mona, it’s the unpredictability.
At least that’s what Gillian has come to believe—that’s her, that girl in the threadbare, stained green dress picking her way through the sun-warmed cobblestone. Her with the snub nose and freckle-dotted cheeks, those pointed ears that mark her status as an elf, thick red hair piled into a now-falling-out twist atop her head since she tried copying the hairstyles she’s seen the ladies on the street wearing.
Gillian Andires has lived in St. Mona all her life. Her mother hasn’t but in the end she has learned many things from her: Sit up straight in your chair so your back doesn’t curve and ache so like mine, her mother tells her. Always tell people “please” and “thank you”—you’re a sweet girl, Gillian, and it’s important that you go about showing it. Always keep your wand on you, I know we only have a few spells on us to make the housework easier but it’s important that you keep easy access to magic with you everywhere you go.
And while she has gone about summer days before now not expecting much except for one heat haze after another next to St. Mona’s unpredictability, Gillian thinks about the page of this summer’s book that’s just about ready to be lifted away. Namely the coming World Fair.
