hey! i've seen you've said you are a reformed mean girl, out of pure curiosity, when did that change happen? while you were still in highschool? during college?
#ReformedMeanGirl
Yep. Thatâs me!!!!
It happened in high school. From what my brain can remember of over a decade ago (shut up, Iâm not old! lol), it was my freshman year that I changed (maybe it bled into the sophomore year).
I was in the âpopular cliqueâ known better as the âbackpack cliqueâ amongst the adults because we all had those backpack purses that were soooooo cool in the early 2000s.
And I had this epiphany my freshman year of high school where I realized my friend groups werenât meshing for stupid reasons. And that it meant more being a good person in your core more than anything. Appearances were totally deceiving for the âpopular kidsâ and I was exhausted.
I had been a âbuddyâ to the SpEd classes before, and when I asked to stop doing that, I was straight up interrogated by teachers about why. It was hard to understand for them that I just didnât want to draw more attention to these kiddos than was needed.
And that was the start of my understanding and realizing that appearance matters, and that some people donât choose to be how they are, and that life can happen without any rhyme or reason.
I went to college knowing I wanted to do social work. I had ideals of CPS at that time, but I realized quickly that wasnât the place for me.
(I wish I could apologize on behalf of all the âpopular bitchesâ. Weâre all learning and growing, I hope.)
(Also, Iâm so open to talk about my past and my experiences and struggles. I hope you all never have to experience my same ish!)
Iâve chosen some articles for those interested in understanding more about privilege, guilt/shame, and fragility when it comes to racism. Where possible, I have linked articles written by POC. I have chosen these articles because they are easy to read. I understand that these topics can feel overwhelming.
What is white fragility? - understanding that fragility is not racism, or privilege, or supremacy, but it can promote the ideals of these things.
What is white guilt? - understanding why it arises, as well as the difference between guilt vs shame, and why thatâs important.
What is white privilege? - a checklist of 50 items that most POC cannot benefit from or count on. Reading this list is a good way to understand how the current system benefits white people in ways we donât always consider or see.
It is not my intention to lecture or point fingers. It is my intention to use my white voice to boost POC voices. When we know better, we can do better. I am still learning. Learn with me.
Being in Costa Rica so far has been such a unique and incredible experience. Itâs interesting that Iâve been asked, âYouâre single? Noooo! Porqueâ? on MULTIPLE occasions. Iâm in a stage of my life where I am learning about myself; my wants, my needs, what makes me happy, etc. and Iâm enjoying uncovering these great mysteries. If I were to jump into the next relationship, it would be incredibly toxic because I wouldnât have allowed myself the opportunity to analyze and improve upon my flaws and weaknesses. I wouldnât get to know the real me. In essence, I would be masking my true self and seeking my happiness within a human being. That is wrong (my opinion). Thereâs no way you can leave one person and jump to the next without confronting yourself. Anyone who does is a lost soul who doesnât know how to be happy from within, and will continue to be such, so long as they donât confront the truth and themselves. Iâm not about that life. The learning and understanding of self is taken for granted, and needs to be restored. We canât continue to be broken souls seeking refuge from other broken and lost souls. Learn to love yourself FIRST in all of your glory and imperfections. Understand how your light shines, so that you may radiate unto others, allowing the universe to work in your favor, not your desperation.
just because you weren't the best person 3 years ago doesn't mean you're not a better person now.
