The Speed 20 was launched as the Speed 20SA (1932-33) and superseded by the 20SB,SC and SD annually (1934-36) all have four speed syncromesh gearboxes and transverse leaf independent front suspension in X braced frames. P100 headlamps are standard and most are bodied by either Vanden Plas or Charlesworth. Power was increased in line with the increasing weight, with the 1934 SB powered by a 2511cc S6 OHC engine and the SC and SD models having a larger 2762cc engine. It was the Alvis company that developed the syncromesh gear change system to ease the changing of gear by making sure that the gear shaft selected was running at the same speed as the engine, using an automatic mechanical mechanism.
