Kroashent Commission: Metal Box Wing Bird
āWhat is THAT?!ā Sarahās tail swished unbidden as she pointed upwards at the sky, her hooves clattering nervously on the stone path lining the city ramparts.Ā Ā
Fredrick craned his neck, holding up his work-worn hands to block out the blinding light of the sun.Ā His eyes tracked the centauressās outstretched finger, finally alighting on a sailing ship, great fin-like sails extending from its side.Ā Ribbons of coloured lights swirled around it, flaring into view as they crashed into the wooden hull.
āOh, thatās a windship.Ā Big one too.Ā I aināt seen that one before, but she might be from Threetower.Ā I hear that the Golden Tower has got herself a shiny new one.ā
āThat boat is in the sky!ā She protested āBoats fly here?ā
āWell⦠yeah.Ā Itās a windship.Ā You aināt seen a windship āafore?ā
āNo!Ā Well, sort of!Ā We do have metal box wing birds!ā Sarah screwed up her face, the wonder of the windship suddenly forgotten at the string of nonsense she had just spouted. āTin can flying gull?
āNo!ā She responded, exasperated.Ā The word was on the tip of her tongue.Ā She had known it up until she tried to say it.Ā āWhy canāt I say metal box wing bird?ā
āWell, it seems like youāre saying āmetal box wing birdā just fine.ā Frederick laughed āIāve just got no idea what it means.Ā Maybe try to describe it.ā
Sarah nodded.Ā That was easy.Ā She had seen⦠whatever they were called⦠many times. āWell, thereās a big box.Ā And it has wings⦠andā¦they flap?Ā Like a seagull⦠Its a big metal seagull, but itā¦āĀ Ā
āA metal seagull.Ā Well, the boffins in the towers are always making weird stuff.Ā I heard that in Letha, someone made a mechanical wyvern out of brass!Ā Maybe its something like that?ā
Sarah nodded, unsure.Ā Even as she tried to recall the object, the memory seemed to become increasingly vague, the details sounding more and more ridiculous.Ā She was even doubting if she hadnāt just made up the thing entirely.
Frederick shook his head, bemused at the strange horsegirlās imagination.Ā Sarah had a talent for coming up with outlandish theories and ideas.Ā Truth be told, it made her appear even more adorable and intriguing to her.Ā āIāll tell you what.Ā At the end of work at the end of the Nineday, Iāll take you up to the hills.Ā You can see all sorts of Windships passing through there.Ā Maybe one of them will be your metal box wing bird.Ā Sound good?ā
Sarah nodded.Ā She was determined that she would figure out why she was having so much trouble remembering.Ā In the meantime, she was going to enjoy the sunny afternoon with the kind blacksmith, the devote her evening to the project.Ā
But by the time the sun began to set over the rolling hills, she had forgotten entirely, settling down to a restful sleep.
