definitely not. obviously, since consumerism began around the time of the industrial revolution you could say that america has always been consumerist to some degree. but consumerism by itself isnât necessarily a bad thing. in fact, iâd even argue itâs probably indicative of healthy, developed nation. having so much abundance that your entire population has access to luxury goods that were once limited to the highest classes of society is a good thing imo.
however, thereâs obviously a huge difference between the consumerism of the last few hundred years vs the consumerism of the last several decades. the consumerism reached a new level in the second half of the 20th century. so i appreciate you specifying âhyperâ consumerism.Â
but no, america was not always âhyperâ consumerist. was it always consumerist? sure. but thatâs not necessarily a bad thing. it was only in the most recent decades that america became this soulless artificial corporate consumerist dystopian hellscape. the consumerism of the 50s or 20s or the 1800s is very different from todayâs.Â
no. the current âhyperâ consumerism is a very recent corruption.

"wait, my hero's secret identity is you? To be honest I've always kind of hoped..."
ReconditeÂ
Pairing: Eren/Mikasa II Rating: T II Words: 2,230 II [AO3]Warnings: Mentions of injuries/blood A/N: This request is from the âright to the good partsâ prompt list! Iâm SO so sorry it took me a long time to share this. I hope you like it! This is loosely inspired by Spiderman (the newer movies). Here, Eren and Mikasa used to be really good friends as children and drifted apart as they got older. Just to add some awkwardness to their encounter lol.Â
â
For a city that never truly slept, it was unusually silent on her street. Instead of listening to the blare of sirens or the footsteps of the neighbors living in the apartment above, she became attuned to the whistling wind as it slipped through the gap of her window and gently blew aside her curtains. She was grateful for the rare respite, found that it made it a lot easier to focus on her studies despite how late it was getting to be. But no matter how much she tried to blink away her exhaustion, the lines that made up the lengthy economics chapter eventually began to blur together and strain her eyes. So instead of forcing herself to focus on a subject she couldnât care less about, she promptly closed the book and stretched, debating if she should work on other assignments. The thought made her yawn and slump her arms on her desk, her head coming to rest upon them a moment later. Iâll work on something else in a minute, she lazily thought, shutting her eyes and resting her head more comfortably on her arm.Â
It felt like she had rested for only a few minutes before she was startled awake by a loud thump, the force rattling the fire escape just outside her window. Hazy and sleepy, she thought it mightâve been something she dreamt, but she was quickly proven wrong when she heard a strained curse that was too close for comfort. Within a second, she was already standing and backing away from her window, fear gripping her heart and constricting her chest.Â
Several things raced through her mind as she blindly grasped for something to defend herself with, cursing herself for leaving the window open. I should leave, she thought desperately, nearly tripping over her own feet as she started towards the door. I need to call Levi and --Â
A figure suddenly collapsed in front of her window with a grunt, coughs racking their body. She flinched, frozen and staring wide-eyed at the person who was struggling to get on their hands and knees. And the little air in her lungs rushed out when he turned his face towards her, the features of it all too familiar even if barely visible. He croaked her name out, the syllables sparse and dry and she rushed over, pulling her window up as high as it could go.Â
âEren? What are you doing here?â she whispered harshly, confused and even more worried at his state. âOh my god â what happened to you?âÂ
âIâŚâ he began, staring up at her almost as if he didnât know how to answer her question. âI need your help. Please, can I come in?âÂ
Wordlessly, she removed some items from her desk and began helping him over it and into her room, practically carrying him in while he hissed in pain. As gently as she could, she eased him into her chair, looking over what she could see of his injuries. The skin on his knuckles looked like theyâve been scraped raw, blood drying where it split. His face was no better off, bearing cuts that were small but numerous, bruises blooming purple over the edge of his jaw and it appeared as if he had been tossed and dragged with the way his clothes were torn at his chest and legs. It was obvious that he had been in more than just a fight.Â
âWhere⌠where are you going?âÂ
She doesn't stop in her step, talking over her shoulder. âIâm grabbing the first aid kit.âÂ
He moves to sit more comfortably when she enters the room again and immediately gasps, clutching his ribs as he sinks back down defeatedly, a bead of sweat trailing down his temple. At this, she realizes that his injuries are a lot more serious than just cuts and bruises.Â
âWhat happened to you?â she tries again, hoping for an answer but he says nothing, reaching up and wiping at his brow. Why wonât he tell her? If he was in serious trouble, she could help him, or get Levi involved. Or maybe... he wasnât saying because he didnât want to get them involved. Heâd always been like that, trying to handle everything on his own. And even like this, beaten down and physically unable to stand, she knew it was pointless trying to get that answer out of him. At least for now.Â
She dampens a cloth with alcohol, carefully dabbing at the cuts littered on his face and hands, apologizing when he flinches at the sting. âWhere else are you hurt?âÂ
He closes his eyes, leaning his head back. âEverywhere, it feels like.âÂ
She places gauze over his knuckles and begins to wrap them, using the last of the roll. âDoes anything feel broken?âÂ
He moves a free hand over his ribs, grimacing. âRight here... might be fractured.âÂ
âIf thatâs the case, I need to get you to a hospital.â She rises, ready to gather her belongings to leave but he catches her wrist, his grip surprisingly strong for his condition. âNo. No hospitals.âÂ
âWhat do you mean ânoâ? Eren, you need to see a doctor if you broke your ribs -âÂ
âFractured ââ
âThatâs something I canât just fix for you.âÂ
âThereâs no need. It will heal, I just need a little bit of time.âÂ
âYouâre not making any sense ââ
âJust trust me,â he insists. âIt will be fine. I donât need a doctor.â
They stare each other down, waiting to see if the other will relent. She does eventually, breaking eye contact and continuing to clean his wounds. Itâs useless to argue with him. If heâs so against getting professional help, then fine. But she just wants to know why. Though she knew he could be reckless and impulsive, she didnât think heâd be illogical.Â
âWhereâs Levi?â
She peers up at him with the sudden shift in topic, then breathes a soft sigh. âWorking. He won't be back until tomorrow morning.â
âOh.â
The silence that follows is almost uncomfortable, and he must feel it too because he shifts awkwardly, clearing his throat as she continues to dress what she can of his wounds. He doesnât look at her until she pushes aside the tangled hair hanging in front of his eyes, exposing the cut on his forehead. She keeps her fingers there, holding the strands back as she finishes cleaning his face and he stares at her, uninhibited, until she speaks up again.
âHow long?â she asks. Heâd been behaving suspiciously these last few months, running off suddenly, missing the classes they had together, his seat vacant at their team meetings. He never explained what he was doing or where he was going. When she tried, she could never find him or contact him and truthfully, it worried her. Sheâd been in denial about it when she first recognized him outside her window, but the evidence was so glaringly obvious that sheâd have to be an idiot to think otherwise.
âHow longâŚ?â he parrots back, confused.Â
She gives an exasperated look but elaborates anyway. âHow long have you been doing... this?â Her hands gesture over his injuries, eyes fixated on the tattered symbol at the center of his chest. Eren sighs in response, head lowering guiltily.Â
âI didnât want you to find out this way,â he murmurs, his tone apologetic.Â
âHow was I supposed to find out then? Was I ever supposed to know?âÂ
He says nothing to answer her. Again. Frustrated, she opens her mouth, intending to scold him for ignoring her questions but she never gets to. He stands, albeit slowly, and starts towards the window with the support of her desk.Â
âIf this is too much, I should probably go. Thank you for helping me, Mikasa. Iâm sorry for scaring you, and⌠and for everything else.â He watches her a few seconds longer and then turns away, attempting to climb over her desk and failing miserably. He cringes and kneels over in pain the moment he lifts his foot onto the edge of the desk, slowly sinking to the floor and she eases him down, supporting his back. His small cry of pain is enough to cut the tension in the air, to make her forget her frustration and instead, direct her focus on taking care of him. He was probably having the roughest night of his life, and here she was trying to force answers out of him. Theyâre both overwhelmed. And they also had time to talk things out later.Â
âStay here for tonight, you shouldnât be moving around too much.âÂ
His brow furrows. âAre you sure about that? What about...â he trails off, wincing. âWhat about Levi?â
âWhat about him?âÂ
Erenâs cheeks redden, and he canât meet her gaze. âWell, um, what if he comes in tomorrow morning and finds me in your room? He might get the wrong ideaâŚâÂ
She catches onto what he's saying and feels her face flushing pink, turning away to hide her embarrassment. âHe wonât come in here. Levi usually goes straight to his room to sleep once he gets home after working night shifts. I doubt itâll be any different in the morning.âÂ
âOh.â
âYeah...âÂ
âWell, okay then.âÂ
She sees movement in her peripheral and she looks back, watching as he makes himself comfortable on the floor. âIâll stay then. I should feel a lot better after I rest a little.â She puts a hand on his shoulder to stop him from laying back and he pauses, questioning her with his expression.Â
âYou can take my bed.â
âWhat? No, I canât do that, not after you -â
âI have to stay up anyway. Itâs fine.Â
âMikasa,â he breathes pleadingly, trying to assure her that heâs fine on the floor but sheâs already helping him onto the mattress. She leaves once more to get him some water and a change of clothes, things he graciously accepts. The color in his cheeks returns when she offers to help him change and after some insistence from his part, she turns to give him privacy, shaking her head as she listens to him struggle.Â
â...Are these Leviâs sweats?âÂ
She turns around and sees him tugging at the cuffs of the pants that reach just before his ankles. A smile pulls at her lips, and she briefly wonders the look Levi would have if he saw Eren and heard what he was implying. âNo, theyâre mine. Sorry that the pant legs are too short.âÂ
âOh, no itâs cool. I donât mind.âÂ
After he finishes the contents of the glass and heâs laying down with a couple more blankets piled on him, she settles back her desk with another uncompleted assignment laid out in front of her. As much as she tries to focus, her mind was still reeling from everything that just happened, and not even the stillness of the night could help as it had earlier. The sudden tug on her sleeve doesnât help either.Â
âHey⌠are you really upset with me? For, you know, this?Â
She thought about it for a moment. âHonestly, I wanted to be. Because you were acting weird for so long and I was worried that you got caught up in something shady. I thought that you were throwing your future away, and I wanted to help, butâŚâ she trails off and he nods in understanding, looking guilty again. She sees this and continues. âIn a weird way, deep down, I always kinda hoped that it was you behind that mask.â
He peers up at her in disbelief. âYou hoped?â
âI didnât really realize it, but yeah, I did. You are the kind of person who would put yourself at risk for others⌠like you did for me when we were younger. Youâre not fighting for the sake of fighting, but rather to help others. And thatâs the person I knew youâd become someday, in some way. I know we arenât as close as we used to be, but I still care about you a lot Eren. So please⌠if youâre going to keep doing this, be careful.âÂ
Her eyes, after having drifted off at some point during her explanation, meet his and the emotion shining in them surprises her. His hold on her sleeve tightens. âI canât promise that nothing will happen to me, but I promise that Iâll do my best to be careful. And even though we drifted apart, I knew I could still trust you. Thatâs why Iâm here. Thereâs no way I couldâve made it home. Really Mikasa, thank you.âÂ
Unsure how to reply, she simply hums and offers him a smile that he immediately reciprocates.Â
âYou should really take a break from schoolwork, at least every once in a while,â he yawns as he tugs at her sleeve again, lightening the conversation. âYou helped us win nationals, you deserve to let loose...âÂ
âI will some time, but not right now.â She gently takes his hand and removes it from her forearm, placing it back at his side. âGet some sleep.âÂ
She glances over at him when he doesnât reply, and finds him grinning, softly, lazily, his eyes already closed. The sight inspires a feeling sheâd long forgotten, warmth flowing in her chest, faintly coloring her cheeks. Itâs the last thing she remembers before falling asleep at her desk, school work abandoned.Â
That meta of yours about Eren was interesting. Boiled down to his bare bones, he's just a guy who wants to a badass. I even went as far once as to call him a terrorist. Tbh Eren was my favourite character from the start and he still is, but your meta just confirmed what I always knew but didn't want to acknowledge.
Thank you! I try my best.I tend to see it more as Eren tries to be badass as a coping mechanism. Every time he has a supposedly âbadassâ scene to me it looks like a little kid trying desperately to look cool. If youâre interested I go more in depth about it here.Â
I love talking about Eren though, heâs my second favorite character after Reiner so if you have any more questions or discussion points feel free to send me to them.Â
I know requests are closed but I have an idea if you ever wanna use it. Since it's Canon that Eren has a high alcohol tolerance, I'd like to see someone find him in a bar surrounded by empty bottles and assume the worst only to find him as sober as he ever is. I just think it'd be funny, Eren Jaeger himself cannot get drunk.

Care For a DrinkÂ
Eren Jaeger. Canonverse.Â
1099 words.Â
Buy me a ko-fi!
The new recruit grumbles as he hurries on over to the pub where Floch had told him Eren would be. He pushes through the crowded streets, muttering under his breath. He doesnât understand why Floch, a seasoned veteran who actually knows Eren, hadnât gone himself to fetch the revolutionary leader. Even though the man had claimed he was busy with the new revolution, it seemed to the soldier that Floch simply liked to wave his gun around and feel important. Heâd never say that out loud, of course. Despite his dislike for the revolutionist, he still believes in the cause and is willing to fight side by side with the man. Of course, the rumors about Floch and his sadistic ideas for those who threaten to defect also help the soldier keep his mouth shut.
In truth, he doesnât mind the task. Itâs far easier and less sneaky than assignments given to others â influencing the minds of young trainees that are on the fence about joining the Jaegerists, meeting with nobles in secret to request funds to support the cause, or feeding information to Marley volunteers that are on their side. Finding a person sounds easy in comparison, although the soldier thinks it would be much easier if he only knew what the person looked like. Floch, of course, did not offer to give him a description.
âYouâll know when you see him,â Floch had said, waving the soldier away without another word.
The soldier gave a simple salute and turned to leave, not bothering to ask any further questions because he knew Floch would refuse to give him any answers. Instead, he decided to follow the few directions that were given to him before he left.
He ends up wandering into a bar. It is one that he has passed by many times but never actually entered because he had no reason to. Even if he were of age to drink, he would never step foot in such an establishment unless he absolutely had to. Compared to the new pubs opened by Marleyans that carry gin and rum from overseas, this tavern is unrefined and has little to offer aside from the Eldian beers that have been around for centuries. Still, it manages to attract a decent amount of customers every night, drunken patrons who come for a cheap bottle of wine to share with friendsâŚbut not tonight.
The soldier is surprised when he approaches the bar and notices that the loud cheers and laughs are nowhere to be heard. Cautiously, he reaches for the door and pushes it open, wondering if there will anyone at all inside. The sight astounds him.
There are bottles of every liquor imaginable on the floor â vodka, whiskey, rum, gin. All are empty, not a single drop remains inside. The soldier isnât quite sure how to walk without stepping on them, so he treads carefully, making sure to sweep away the empty bottles to clear a walkway as best as he can. He nearly has a heart attack when he almost treads on someoneâs fingers.
Looking around, he realizes that the pub is not only covered in empty bottles but also drunken patrons who couldnât hold their liquor. As he walks in further, he wonders what caused these men to drink so much. People are slumped across the floors and tables, their mouths hanging open and with sweat and beer staining their clothes. Theyâve done this to themselves, he knows, but he still canât help but pity them as he glances over at their sleeping forms. Heâs sure that theyâll all be waking up with a wicked hangover in the morning.
He wonders if Eren Jaeger is among these people, and he hates the thought of sifting through these bodies to find the leader of the revolution. Heâs about to begin looking, but he looks up and sees that there are still two people sitting at the bar. As he steps closer, he sees that both are awake. One is the bartender, a stoic expression on his face as if heâs seen this sight before. The other is a man with long dark hair, his back turned to the soldier.
The soldier isnât sure what he had thought Eren Jaeger would look like. Heâs only heard of him from others about the manâs quest to find freedom for everyone, the sacrifices heâs made for them, and the immense power he holds. If he had to conjure up an idea of what such a revolutionary would look like, he would come up with the image of a man with a strong jaw, dark hair thatâs slicked back, and bright eyes that are able to see further than anyone else could imagine. This haggard man, thin and tall with dark hair down to his shoulders, doesnât look anything like what a revolutionary leader should look like, and yet the soldierâs breath still hitches when the man turns around and looks at him with piercing gray eyes. He stares at the soldier so intensely that the soldier is sure the manâs not drunk at all, and he wonders if itâs because the man has hardly had a drop or if itâs because heâs managed to outdrink everyone in this bar and doesnât feel a thing. Somehow, the soldier knows itâs the latter.
The soldier tries to speak, but he seems to have lost his voice. He stares at the man in front of him, opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water. Itâs only when the man turns back around, tapping the bar in front of him to signal the bartender for another drink, that the soldier finally manages to find his voice. âAre youâŚare you Eren Jaeger?â the soldier asks.
The man does not reply right away. Instead, he waits for the bartender to pour his whiskey, and it seems as though a century has passed. âI am,â the man replies, picking up his glass. He does not look at the soldier when he speaks nor does he ask for his name. He simply taps the bar once more, and the bartender places down another glass and begins pouring. It is only then that the man turns his head, gesturing for the soldier to join him. âCare for a drink?â
The soldier knows that he should decline lest he wants to wind up like the other patrons of this bar. Still, he walks towards the bar and takes a seat beside the man. He reaches for the glass, but his eyes are on Eren Jaeger as he replies, âYes.â Â
Since so many SJWs are bitching about a lack of diversity in fantasy, would it be a feasible idea to make a fantasy series set in an area based around Persia/India? (Plus just for fun, add in a token English knight character with his Welsh squire/archer, just for fun)

I've only read Berserk recently but I've really gotten into it. It's a big deal for me since I point blank refuse to touch anime shut.
Yeah, Berserk is... itâs definitely one of those outlier ones where, even people who do not like anime will categorically agree that it is a brilliant work of fiction.
