Some Thoughts about Corporations and Pride
This conversation has been bubbling up the last few years, but this year especially people seem to be increasingly frustrated about corporate companies at Pride. I’ve also seen people say not to purchase corporate made products that have Pride lines this time of year. Now Some of this I get. We don’t need our banks’ names in rainbow letters or Amazon to have a space in the parade. And we should be supporting queer creators during pride month (and every other time of the year).
But also, seeing large scale companies making products for us and in support of us isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We talk about how they’re only using us for capitalism, but if we look at it another way, marketing towards LGBTQ people means that LGBTQ people are profitable and companies can comfortably take part in the conversation of that there is a market and demand for merchandise and products aimed to LGBTQ people. We can’t ask to be normalized and in the mainstream without also being marketed to on a large scale.
This also means that companies are being more outwardly interested in not only customers of queer demographics, but also their employees. A lot of corporate companies being criticized for being at pride actually have a 100% rating from the Corporate equality index .Â
And this may be the bias of speaking as a queer designer who is going to be working in corporate spaces - at some level of the company, there are actually people behind it, people of all identities. For companies actually making pride products, this could be a designer finally making something for their own community, the first time they ever have been able to on a large scale. This could be just my own place and the privilege I have to have the opportunity to work in corporate spaces, but there is something I find comforting about being a creator who can make it and be supportive by a company that isn’t afraid to support me.
It feels performative, and i totally get that. And as someone who isn’t into the big party atmosphere, a smaller pride focusing just on community groups and smaller queer own businesses should be pushed for! But I think we shouldn’t necessarily demonize corporations for being included, and in their work spaces, including us, as long as their support is backed by their company policies.Â
