Alterfish and how to portray them in fiction-a guide
So here's a confession- I am Alterfish (faehearted and fictionkin of Eternal Siren Seacookie from Seacookie Dash Atlantis.). As an autistic and queer inkling, it pains me to see Alterfish ridiculed every day, both indirectly and directly. We can and should do better, especially in such a colorful society. So here's some tips to how to write about Alterfish in fiction and beyond.
1: Take it seriously
This was originally supposed to just say "be respectful" but respect encompasses a variety of things. So i will start with not ridiculing or joking about alterfish in a harmful manner. Even seemingly benevolent jokes can come of as hostile. Treat the subject of alterfish struggles with the same level of seriousness as you would treat any other.
2: Talk to Alterfish!
Another thing that should go without saying. Alterfish are not a monolith and we encompass a variety of folk, with different experiences and kintypes. If there are any more alterfish around, please do pitch in if you wish
3: Have their alterfishness affect the story, no matter the scale
Many people try their best to write Alterfish like any other sea creature- hiding their Alterfishness. I understand this approach- but why write about alterfish at all if it's not going to affect how they live and how they think?
Thank you for hearing me out on this small tip of the iceberg on tips on how to write Alterfish!
