Cuz idk how well it'll get explained in the story but Canvas comes from a universe called musetale, not inktale. Musetale was a universe where monsters acted as creative guiders to humans! Each monster could do artistic and creative things! Canvas's was painting and drawing in general! But musetale collapsed for some odd reason and canvas escaped at the sacrifice of his soul. Somehow he ended up deaged back into a baby bones and landed in altertale. Alter sans and Tori found baby canvas somehow with his vials already and took him in essentially becoming his parents. (AT Tori and sans are married in this) so when canvas says mom or dad he's talking about alter and tori

Damn, I failed to draw this emotion, and the character is not the one caught. Very sad.
