Quiet and imposing in their sleep, not even dust dares to cover the ancient brass shine and painted wooden scales. Their eyes stay shut even when youâre passing right under their noses, a misstep you would have regretted in their days. But now, energy has left them, no lightning flows through steely claws anymore. Visitors are allowed to get much closer than when their massive bodies were still weaving impassible runs on the streets of Zurich, skimming over melting summer asphalts and across icy winter tracks. They were tame creatures though, unflinching hard workers repeating the same ritual of the agreed schedules while carrying an entire small world in their large bellies smelling of grease and chipped wood, a world of cheerful school kids biting in crumbly biscuits, of talkative grandmas jokingly chiding them, of grave employees frowning from behind thick rimmed glasses when reading a morning newspaper and sometimes a street musician or two singing foreign songs, warm scenes punctuated by the lively ring of that familiar bell. Close your eyes in the golden evening, let a glass of Aranykakas Altbier tickle you with dried fruit and biscuits, and allow the flamboyant beast from your memories grow back to what it once was. Can you see its massive body stubbornly weaving that same path, year after year along those trees shedding colorful tears in the cold autumn rains and blooming again in spring pride? Can you hear also the faint screech of metal wheels, their determination starting to creak, inner rumble louder and louder, can you hear them starting to get tired? Times have changed⌠when the dragons first arrived they were heroes, now theyâre museum pieces, body worlds⌠frozen in time here, where old trams came to die.
A little Legendary Red Ale by Golden City Brewing. A really nice Duesseldorf Style Altbier. Malty and a little sweet with a clean finish and nice color. Good at the end of a long day! #legendaryredale #goldencitybrewery #gcb #duesseldorf #Altbier #beer #craftbrewery https://www.instagram.com/p/CKP6fFYFnW_/?igshid=1rbqmdorxzkji
Light and slightly sweet and nutty with flavors of roasted malt. Altbier is a style I donât see often, but when I do Iâm always sure to pick it up. A wonderful compliment to a chilly, beautiful spring sunset. ⢠3165 Alt Monadnock Brewing Co Langdon, NH ⢠⢠⢠--------------------------------------------------------- #ReviewsWithoutBoobs⢠#beer #nh #603 #beerofinstagram #delightful #beers #beerlover #craftnotcrap #craftbeer #drinklocal #nhbeertrail #shoplocal #hopsmash #nhmade #brewnh #beerhunting #altbier #sunset #lakelife #NHCBW2020 #quarantine @monadnockbrewing @brewnh @nhbeertrail @nhbeerweek @beers.n.bites @indiebeer_ (at Paugus Bay) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-zhlJRJcs_/?igshid=4d40baguhplh

Yesterday was brew day. I thought some Alt would be nice and due to the high temperatures here I gave the Norwegian kveik-yeast a try. The wort came out quite dark (I had some Special B laying around I wanted to get rid of :-D) but the little yeasty vikings seem happy.
Alemannia (Strange Land)
Brewery : Strange Land Beer : Alemannia Style : Alt / Altbier Variance : None
7.5 / 10
Man, first WWE starts the whole Wrestlemania trend and now Strange Land is riding their coattails with an Alemannia? The only way Iâd be cool with that is if at Alemannia beers just beat the shit out of each other to compete to be my beverage of choice for the night because that would be fucking rad. Wait, Iâm being told that Alemannia has one too many of the letter ânâs so I guess I was wrong about the whole wrestling thing. Boo hoo. Anyways, letâs move on to the style. Ahhh, the alt. Once a header on your favorite CD section of Coconuts Music (remember them?) where you could find anything from R.E.M. to Husker Du to Soundgarden, then a delicious German-style beer category that was widely renowned, and now a prefix to the shitty racist right wing extremist but just like âporch-monkeyâ⌠Strange Land is taking âaltâ back! If you thought that last part was racist please go watch Clerks 2. I mean, itâs still kinda racist but at least you got to watch Clerks 2, right?! Right. A subtle spicy and peppery flavor starts things off with a nice bready malt flavor mixing in afterwards before some clove-y malty funky flavors mix in with a bit of sweetness to close. This beer is so damn filling that I feel like I need to unbutton my pants just after one glass even though it only has a 4.5% ABV but the flavors alone make this so much richer than I ever expected. If you are a fan of the style or are just looking to explore a new style that not many breweries are tackling, pick this up because itâs definitely a solid beer for just about any level of drinker out there. Prost!

Fungus Takes Over the World
Mushroom Ale is exactly what it sounds like, a beer made with mushrooms. Did you know you could make a beer with mushrooms? Neither did we. Then Old Town Brewing made one for the big Oregon Brewerâs Festival in 2015. We put it on the ânopeâ list, but a lot of people said it was good, or at least worth a try. Apparently, enough people liked it that they brought it back last year, and it was good. It was weirdly good.Â
Another year, another bottle, and itâs still a great beer. Where most fruit, or vegetable, enhanced beers attempt to recreate said fruit, Mushroom Ale still tastes like beer. Itâs a good beer, not just an interesting use of fungus. Candy cap mushrooms have a distinct maple flavor to them -- thatâs why theyâve also been used by Salt and Straw to make ice cream. When added to Old Townâs Altbier base, candy caps sweeten the beer without adding any extra sugar, the same way a little vanilla extract makes cookies tastier. The earthiness of the fungus blends into toasty malt and the sharp bitterness. The result is dry and moreish and far more beer like than your average vegetable infused ale.
When it first came out, Jeff wrote on Beervana that Mushroom Ale âsuggests a brave new, post-style world just out there in the near future.â He probably couldnât have guessed how prescient he was. In 2017 saison can mean anything, half the new beers are brewed with some fruit or other, and no one is sure what an IPA is even supposed to look like anymore.
