Alt 25. âIâm coldâ â âHere, have my jacketâ
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Had he known the weather was going to be this awful, he probably wouldnât have picked this mission. The Valley already sends a chill down his spine. Not just from the cold, but because if he listens carefully, he swears he can hear the wind whistling turn into shrieks from God Eaters past. Perhaps a bit morbid to think, but Romeo and Nana once put the thought into his head.
The comms chirp. âHey, you two. Looks like itâs just some small guys for now, but thereâs a medium signal heading your way in about⌠I dunno, five minutes? Doesnât seem to be in any rush.â Teru sounds as calm as ever.
âWould it really kill âim to sound a little more serious?â Gil mutters before he turns his mic on. âSounds good. Weâll take care of these runts until then.â They stand on the cliff, towering above the herd of Dreadpikes on the ground. Renatus huddles into himself, trying to angle himself under a cliff. The wind is worse this high up, and while itâll improve on the ground, heâs hesitant to move. Gil nudges his arm. âWhatâs the plan, Captain?â
Renatus pretends he was thinking this whole time. âThereâs only a small group up here. Iâll knock them down, you finish them off. We should knock them down with time to spare until Teruâs gives an update.â Gil nods, and they launch downwards, taking out two Dreadpikes with the impact alone.
âLittle guys all wiped out! The signal is closer, but itâs dawdling. Looks like itâs heading to Point D.â The other side of the field, because of course it is. âDamn. Looks like the snowâs picking up too. Hopefully, youâll get the job done before it gets too heavy.â Renatus sighs through his nose as he hauls his Arc up.
âWe just might beat it over there if we ä¸â Teruâs frantic voice stops him.
âSorry, guys, we have an emergency! Another signal has been spotted ä¸ Large Aragami converging on your location! T-minus 30 seconds!â
âThe hell did this one come from?!â A roar vibrates the air, snowflakes falling heavier. âDamn, looks like the stormâs here too.â
The moment the Caligula hauls itself onto the field, the look in Gilâs eyes changes to something angry.
âYou⌠you remind me of someone I despise!â He charges in without a second thought, leaving Renatus to shake his head.
âSo much for waiting for another plan.â
âWill you stop running?! Get back here and stay down!â Gil charges his spear and launches himself at the fleeing Caligula. It spins around just as Renatus rapid-fires blaze bullets into the boosters on its back, giving Gil ample chance to pierce the broken bond on its head. With a cry that shakes the ground around them, it falls dead.
âNice shot, kid.â Gil slings his God Arc over his shoulder as Renatus devours the carcass. Still no good materials, it seems. He tsks.
âPlease donât rush in like that. Caligula-types always get you fired up.â He doesnât need to turn around as he swings his own Arc into an approaching Dreadpike. It shutters then falls over just as dead. âI donât know where that one came from. Mustâve escaped.â Gil stares at him, blankly.
âYouâre pretty terrifying yourself, Captain. Donât know a lot of people who can keep up with you. But⌠youâre right. Sorry. I shouldâve been more careful, especially with just us two.â He shrugs a shoulder and pulls his Arc up. âYâknow, Iâve never really noticed how pretty this place is.â The comms chirp. âTeru, any updates on the transport?â It crackles for a moment, then Teruâs muffled voice comes through.
âLooks like some snow is heading your way. Iâm not sure weâll get to you before it hits. Will you two be alright until then? It should pass soon. I think.â
That doesnât make him feel any better. Renatus is not built for the cold, but thatâs his own fault. He knew theyâd be going into a colder area, so did he think to grab anything warmer than a zip-up crop top? No. Because the cold doesnât matter if you look good.
He may be captain, but he is not intelligent.
âNo problem. Thereâs a cave over here, we can hide out in here til then.â Gil sets his Arc against the wall, letting his head fall back. Now that they arenât fighting, the adrenaline wears off. The wind howls and bites into Renatus. He debates firing blaze bullets at himself to see if itâd warm him up. Itâs a dumb idea of course, Gil would get caught in the crossfire, and thereâs a decent chance itâll attract more Aragami.
â ä¸good? Captain? You alright?â Heâs brought back to reality by Gil shaking his arm, then yanking it back. âKid, youâre freezing! Why didnât you say something earlier?â
âItâs a bit of wind, Gil. Iâll survive.â He wonât. Heâs going to turn into a Renatus-shaped popsicle and it wonât taste appetizing.
âKid, you sure? You look like youâre about to freeze over.â
âNothing I canât handle.â It seems like he gives up on Renatus admitting it, as he pulls off his jacket without another word.
âHere, take this. The fur lining should warm you up a bit.â He drapes it over Renatusâs shoulders, tucking him in. âBetter?â
His face burns. Not from the cold, but rather the fact that he is wearing Gilâs jacket and it smells like him and it is warm.
âDo you want my hat too? This is a lot warmer.â Gil doesnât wait for a reply again before plopping it onto his head. âI can put the earflaps down too, if you want.â
âReally, Gil, you donât have to do this. Iâll be okay.â
âYou say that, but youâve been shakinâ like a leaf this whole time. Donât think I didnât notice.â Damn. He was hoping that wasnât obvious. âJust let me help, yeah? Think of it as me making up for being reckless earlier.â
âIâm not angry about that. I canât say I blame you for it, either.â Heâd never met Kate, but if the way Gil and Haru talk about her is anything to go by, heâd do the same. For her memory.
âStill. Warm yourself up, Renatus. Weâve still got some times before the snow clears.âÂ
ââŚThank you.â Gil tucks him under his arm, cheek resting on his head. They stand in silence, watching the snow fall around them.
About ten minutes later, the comms chirp again. âSnowâs clearing up! Weâll send a chopper your way riiiiiight now.â Teruâs voice makes them jump.
âI suppose I should give your coat and hat back.â He tries to move away but Gil just pulls him in tighter.
âNah. Weâve still got time. You look comfy. And⌠uh, you look⌠nice. In my jacket. Not in a weird way! Just ä¸ yeah. Comfy.â Gil avoids his eyes, looking intently at the wall beside them.
âMaybe Iâll have to borrow them more often, then.â Renatus tucks himself further into the embrace. Gil pulls him in closer.
âI⌠think Iâd be alright with that."
