So I rewrote Code Brown but with the Kravitz Family...
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
Okay we've all read Code Brown. This is just that but rewritten with like 7k words, multiple chapters and more interactions between the family.
But if you haven't, Code Brown was basically talking about a Bright Family Reunion after Claire Lumineaux's death. In there, the Bright family gathered so Tamlin could hand out things Claire had left behind in the will.
Now go back to the second sentence of the summary.
Sal adjusts his tie for the seven-hundredth time, every time he moved it he swore it was either strangling him or it was about to fall off. The gang had ended up with Larry driving them to the prom, Ash called shotgun and was sitting in front, while Sal sat at the back, next to Neil and Todd. Obviously, with three seats he would normally sit in the middle, being the smallest, it would be easier, but with the school very likely to separate the couple from dancing, they had to take advantage of their time.
Sal was wearing a simple tuxedo, he'd had to put several safety pins on it, his dad couldn't afford to buy a new one, so he had to wear his. A part of Sal wished his dad could've helped, but he'd had a hard day at work and ended up drinking as soon as he got home. Larry wears a dress shirt over some torn up jeans, to tie it all together, some combat boots. Ash wore a purple dress, which ended at her knees, and fishnet leggings underneath. Even with Sal knowing he and Ash would never work, he couldn't help but admit how amazing she looked. Todd and Neil were the only ones in the group going as a couple, they co-ordinated their outfits, Neil wearing a navy over-shirt over a buttoned up shirt, and Todd wearing a dark red one. They even had matching roses.
Sal sighs quietly, grabbing his phone to use the shitty camera to see how his tie looks.
Neil glances over and to Sal's embarrassment asks "Do you need help with that?"
Sal shakes his head, "No.. I think I've got it."
"Dude. You tied it wrong," bluntly states the ginger sitting next to him, "Mind if I retie it for you?"
Sal desperately wanted to say no, but he couldn't, "Go ahead, just don't strangle me."
"Not without consent." Todd states bluntly as he starts retying it, Sal inadvertently backs up, cackling like a hyena.
Neil chokes out an amused "Todd!"
At the front Larry snorted, trying to focus on the road, while Ash laughed loudly. Sal feels Todd start retying it again, with a shit eating grin. After a moment he's done, Sal gives a small tug to the tie, making sure it doesn't get out of place, "Thanks, man."
Todd gives the shorter teen a thumbs up and goes back to laying on Neil.
---
After walking in the team ended up sitting at a table, the prom was simply inside the gym, several tables were laid out, some had cheap table cloth on them, most not. Neil and Todd were dancing together, leading Ash, Sal, and Larry to sit at the table, just chatting.
Larry takes a sip of the soda he'd ordered and turns to Ash, "How come you came here? You never seemed to like these dances much."
Sal tilts his head at his brother, "I don't think any of us really wanted to be here."
Ash nods, quietly thinking of an answer, "I wasn't going to come until Sal decided to, honestly. It's kind of boring, but there's something.. interesting? About a dance," Ash waves a hand over to a particular touchy couple, "everyone's either trying to fuck each other," she then gestures to Todd and Neil, "Actually trying to have a decent time."
Larry makes a fake grossed out face at the dancing couple, "They're so happy together, it almost makes me sick."
Sal chuckles, "Come on, you watched a shit ton of romcoms with me, and you're freaking out over it in real life?"
Ash puts a hand over her heart, mocking offense, "Didn't being forced to watch terrible romcoms mean something?"
It was Sal's turn to pretend to be offended, "Terrible! Aren't you in art class? You said all art was pretty!"
Ash mutters something incomprehensible to him. Larry tilts his head, "What?"
Ash chuckles, "Live, laugh, love."
Larry slowly puts his head in his hands, "Oh. My. God."
Staring over towards the exit, Sal spots a certain terrible haircut, with way-too-bright-to-work-with-his-skin-tone blond hair. The tallest of the group notices the other's line of sight, "No the fuck you aren't."
Ash stares over, glinting her eyes, "If this weren't a formal dance I would punch him."
Sal waves a hand, "Since last year we've had a few conversations, he's changed. He's just lonely and filled with self loathing."
Larry groans, "Your choice, but if he lays a finger on you, I'm beating the shit out of him, dance or no dance."
Sal gets up, "Yeah, yeah. He only really hated me."
Ash fidgets with her dress, "Yeah, that's the problem. It's your choice but.."
Larry shakes his head, "You're too nice, man."
Sal was hardly listening, already heading over to the boy, "Hey, long time no see?"
Sal just knew Travis enough to know when the other boy was being sarcastic, "Couldn't get you out of my hair if I tried."
Despite the fact the blue-hair knew he couldn't see it, he grins under his mask, "Come on, you know you love me." he says jokingly.
Travis stiffens, "No- I.."
Sal fidgets with his own sleeves, "Sorry, are you alright to sit with me and my friends? I told them to be civil."
Travis groans, very clearly trying to hide the facade of not having a crush on fucking Sally Face, "Uh yeah, sure, my dad forces me to go here, then I get called over by the blue haired bitch." He grins, losing a bit of his composure, "Yeah, I'd love to. Are your friends fine with it? I can see Larry trying to murder me with his eyes."
Sal chuckles, "Don't worry, you haven't picked on me in ages, just make sure to keep that up."
The blond puts a hand on the back of his neck, "I can do that, but I probably won't be here for long anyways."
The masked boy nods, leading Travis over to the table, after a moment of hesitation, he sits down next to Sal. He quietly sighs, looking over to Sal's friends, "I know I haven't been very nice to all of you and I'm sorry about that."
Ash blankly stares at him, a bit surprised, she gives Sal a look, as if to ask if he put him up to this, Sal shrugs.
Larry rolls his eyes, "You're just lucky you're not easy to strangle."
Travis laughs at that, surprisingly, "Yeah, I know," he looks over towards the others, "Do either of you like school brownies?"
Larry stares at him suspiciously, while Ash half-heartidly nods.
Travis stands up, walking over to a one of the main entrance tables, during this Neil and Todd sit down at the table, clearly bothered.
Todd sighs, "I think.. that we might have to leave soon."
"But we just got here!" Ash complains.
Neil puts a hand over the back of his neck, the other holding Todd's, "A teacher just got onto us. Can't stand us, apparently." Todd leans on Neil, "I hate teachers." Neil plants a small kiss on the other's forehead. As this is happening, Travis sits back over to the table awkwardly looking over to the couple, he grabs some brownies, covered in plastic wrap, out of his pockets, handing them to the others who were at the table before.
Todd glances awkwardly at Larry, who was already unwrapping his brownie, there was an unspoken agreement that they both couldn't stand Travis.
The blond in question slumps over the table, farther off from how proud he seems during school, "Sorry, I should've figured you guys would sit over here, especially with.." Travis looks over to the teachers watching over the students, "Them."
Sal puts the brownie he'd gotten into one of his pockets, he'd taken a little extra of his meds before to be up for this and they killed his appitite. It wasn't healthy, but it did make sure he could act 'normal.'
Todd leans up from his position, "You aren't going to say anything?"
The blond sighs, "No. I'm sorry I was rude to you guys before, that was wrong of me. I'm happy for you really, it's unfair you guys can't dance too."
Neil half grins, "We're too cool for prom."
---
The conversation went on like that for the next hour, it was surprisingly calm. Even from Travis' angle, who seemed to be trying hard not to step over anyone's boundaries. Lucky for them, the teachers didn't care all too much unless, the horror, a gay couple dances together. It seemed to be a relief for the group.
