still have some lingering thoughts of Wild Force on the brain, mostly how the final battle had my absolutely favorite trope when it comes to costumed hero stuff. Suits Don’t Make The Hero.
Like, at the end the heroes are stripped of their powers, soaked from the rain in their civilian clothes, their giant robot is scrap metal, they have no chance no way of winning. so what do they do?
They strike the fucking poses, scream out their call-outs, and declare that they are fucking power rangers, suits or no suits.
Like yeah the suits and the robots and the various weapons are absolutely part of the appeal of Power Rangers/Super Sentai, but that’s just what gets your foot in the door. If all it was was just huge explosions and rubber suits this franchise and everything related to it wouldn’t have lasted 4 years, much less more than four decades. You come for the suits and stay for the characters, and the whole idea of “you need to deserve the power to get it, and the power itself does not define your worthiness” is just cool no matter what.
Anyone can look cool posing in color-coded spandex if they have enough confidence and a good enough soundtrack to back them up, it takes a real hero to be able to be just as cool in that pose when the villain rips the suit off, revealing the mortal, average person underneath, and foolishly thinks that means he’s won.
But when the villain sees the heroes pick themselves up, strike that pose again, and now the helmet is off and they can see the determined expression on their faces? That’s fucking cool.
