What did I do instead of work? Thatâs right - I wrote. This is from chapter 4 of Hellâs Secret.
__________
The first thing Crowley noticed was the cold. His eyes werenât good as a snake, but he could easily detect the temperature difference between Rome and wherever they were.
The second thing he noticed was Aziraphale tensing up beneath him. His body stiffened; power rose beneath his skin.
âWe figured youâd come here eventually,â the Devil said. âYou never go someplace cold if you can help it. But youâre a wiley thing, Crowley. You like to do the unexpected. I wonât allow you to run away again. I figured youâd come to the South Pole eventually.â
He needed eyes, needed hands and legs. Crowley pushed off of Aziraphaleâs shoulders, transforming as he did. Before he hit the ground, he read the situation â a dozen demons, hellfire weapons wielded by each. Â
But even as he moved to stand back-to-back with Aziraphale, none of them moved to attack. Â
âWhat do you want, Satan?â Aziraphale spat. Â
Crowley couldnât see the Devilâs response, he stood facing Aziraphale, but the demon across from Crowley looked bored. Interestingly enough, they werenât surrounded by dukes and princes. These werenât the heavy hitters. They were mid class, third-tier. What was the Devil playing at?
âAs I told Crowley before, I have a job for him.â
âIâm not going back to Hell!â Crowley screeched. He reached back for Aziraphaleâs hand, ready to curse them away. To run. Â
Something heavy hit him in the side of the face.
