         brittle.   like   chalk   breaking   apart,   leaving   fingers   coated   in   gunpowder.   she’s   built   her   walls   high,   locking   out   everything   that   could   harm,   but   she’s   trapped   inside   a   sandcastle   and   each   lash   of   oceanic   waves   threatens   to   burn   her   kingdom   down   to   dust.   this   frail   unbecoming   wrapped   up   in   gilded   thread,   as   if   to   hide   the   cracks   in   a   facade   doomed   to   shatter   from   the   start.

      they’re   both   children   of   chaos.   it   bore   them   as   a   mother   would,   celestial   womb   paved   in   vitriol,   in   anguish,   in   every   mistake   spreading   like   a   disease.   lex   talionis,   but   there   are   only   so   many   eyes   you   can   scratch   out   before   the   world,   too,   goes   blind.   hostages   to   primordial   sin.   there’s   pomegranate   juice   in   her   mouth,   and   when   she   swallows,   it   burns   her   throat.

      she   doesn’t   answer   ---------   doesn’t   know   how   to   accept   it   without   verbalising   a   confession   she   isn’t   ready   to   make.   instead,   she   shifts   until   they’re   pressed   together,   until   her   arms   can   coil   loosely   around   his   waist,   her   face   hidden   from   sight   into   the   crook   of   his   neck,   hidden   from   the   monsters   and   demons   and   shadows   clawing   their   way   into   the   room.
