It isn’t until he holds the item between them, eyebrow raised in silent question, that Steve’s eyes drop to the collar in his hand.

Summary:

After going AWOL and leaving SHIELD under cover of darkness, Steve Rogers has been on the run for the last year. He’s been to every corner of the United States, never staying for more than a couple of days to keep himself off SHIELD’s radar.

In Homer, Alaska, he meets a shopkeeper named Bucky. Sparks fly between them from the start, and every ounce of self-preservation that Steve has learned in the past year is thrown out the window as he is taken by the desire to learn more about Bucky.

Their romance blooms quickly, but they are both keeping a piece of themselves hidden. Bucky has a daughter that he’s fiercely protective of, and Steve can’t bring himself to tell Bucky his true identity while SHIELD is still after him.

When the past eventually comes knocking, Steve and Bucky find out that their lives are far more intertwined than they could have possibly known.

Disenchanted by what the world has become and furious with SHIELD’s attempts to make him sacrifice another lifetime, Steve Rogers disappears.  Years later, the name Nomad is only heard in hushed whispers, as if saying the mercenary’s name too loud will bring his wrath. Long gone are the days of doing what’s right and fighting for justice. Instead, he is ruled by the desire for control over his destiny and ruthlessness that only comes when you cast off notions of “the greater good”. Another day, another target’s blood on his hands, another paycheque.  Good in Nomad's world is earned through suffering and service, entirely removed from the realm of morality. It's found in dark rooms where no one sees his face, scented with leather and tasting metallic on his tongue. It's giving up his body for someone else to take in his brief moments of surrender, feeling the blood-hot press of someone inside him, pinning him where he lay. He disappears again when his needs are met, resuming his ultimate control, holstering his gun before moving on to his next target. No one dares to get in his way. Or, at least no one did. A shadow with steely eyes has risen in New York carrying a bullet carved with his name.
