OBS.: this list is compilation of what I learned from chapter 5 + additional vocabulary I seached while studying it. for exemple, this chapter had the words “this year” but not “this month” and “this week”, so I looked it up and wrote it all together here.

its been SO LONG since I formally studied english and I'm terryfied with the possibility of simply forgeting my second language. having that said, I'll be doing the 30 Day Challenge - Advanced Language Study created by @somajesticdonki ♥️

Day 1: Read a news article in your target language. Write down any words or phrases you don’t know. Take note of what kind of speech is used when describing the news. Write a summary of the article, rephrasing it in your own words.

I read the article “Pope Francis urges peace in conflict zones in Christmas address”.

to urge: "Lawyers will urge the parents to take further legal action", "the dogs are urged into fighting".

to ravage: to cause great damage to smth or someone (to ruin, to shatter, to sour). "The area has been ravaged by war".

the Pontiff: formal for Pope (Pontífice, in portuguese).

the truce: a short interrunmptionm in a war or argument. an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time (armistice, ceasefire, trégua in portuguese). “After yearrs of rivalry the two companies have agreed to a true".

to broker: to arrange smth such as a deal, agreement, etc. between two or more groups or contruies (intermediar/mediar in portuguese). "The diplomats have failed in their attempts to broker a ceasefire".

the famine: a situation in whice there is not enough good for a great number of people (starvation).

to allude to smth/somebody: to mention smth/sombody in a brief or indirect way.

detriment: harm or damage. "She was very involved with sports at college, to the detriment of her studies".

to undertake: to do or begin to do smth, spacially sth that will take a long time or be difficult "This is one of the largest projects ever undertaken".

to herald: to be a sign that snth important, and often good, is starting to happen; to make smth publicly known (anunciar in portuguese). "The president's speech heralds a new era in foreign policy", "this drug has been herald as a major breakthrough".

to hold an event: to organize a meeting or a social event. "Shall we hold a party?", "the election will be held on the 8th of November".

a breather: a short rest (pausa in portuguese). 

the scope: the range of matters considered or dealt with (extensão/alcance in portuguese). "We are going to widen the scope of the investigation".

a homily: sermão in portuguese.

the plight: a sad/difficult condition. "The plight of the poor".

tbh I didn’t know how to help you with pt br since you’re already so good at it! so I decided to write you a list with a few expressions we use in brazil:

sextar - (literally “to friday”) we turned friday into a verb. meaning: it’s friday so I’ll do friday night stuff, like go to a party and get really drunk. It can also be used ironically like “vou passar a noite toda vendo netflix, sextou”.

bora - abbreviation of “vamos embora” (let’s go). vamos embora -> vambora -> bora

tá mec - it’s great, fine. used by a younger generation (mostly by men)

tá sussa - similar to “tá mec”, but kinda old-fashioned

dá um pulinho aqui, por favor - this means “could you come here (quickly), please”. it’s similar to “vem cá rapidinho”. mostly used by (my) parents in a passive-aggressive way.

se pá - “se der…”, “se (você) puder..."  

- vamos naquele rolê? (let’s hang out?)

- se pá, eu vou sim (se pá, I’ll go)

top/topíssimo - great, awesome. it used to be a weird slang but now we say it all the time lol

Day 3:  Watch an episode of a tv show or a movie in your target language, without subtitles. Try going for something you haven’t seen before and see how much you understand. Write down any phrases and words you don’t know with what you think they mean, based on context. You can check the meanings after you finish watching. If you have time, feel free to watch it again and see how much you understand now that you’ve checked these words.

to deploy (my supposition: to move, to put): to move soldiers or equipment to a place where they can be used when they are needed: The decision has been made to deploy extra troops/more powerful weapons. 

to undermine (my suppostion: to destroy): to make someone less confident, less powerful, or less likely to succeed, or to make something weaker, often gradually: A succession of scandals and revelations has undermined the government over the past year.

outleave -> turns out it was "outlive" (my supposition: to overcome): to live or exist longer than someone or something: He outlived all of his brothers.

overstate (my supposition: ??):  to describe or explain something in a way that makes it seem more important orserious than it really is. Synonym: exaggerate/Opposites: downplay, minimize, understate.

blind siding -> blind side: the area behind and slightly to one side of you that you cannot see, for example when you are driving. in portuguese: ponto cego.

intel (my supposition: new information): secret information about the governments of other countries, especially enemy countries(a shortform of the word "intelligence"): What was the point of getting a man onto the base if it wasn’t to gather intel?

postpone (my supposition: ??): to delay an event and plan or decide that it should happen at a later date ortime: They decided to postpone their holiday until next year.

gear (my supposition: smth car related): a device, often consisting of connecting sets of wheels with teeth (=points) around the edge, that controls how much power from an engine goes to the moving parts of a machine. in portuguese: engrenagem (yeah, I would’ve never guessed that one haha).

Day 4: If you are currently studying something other than language, research the vocabulary for that subject in your target language (for example, I’m a music major, so I’d research vocabulary and phrases used to describe music in my target language). If you don’t have any other focus of study, choose a hobby.

I study language and literature in college and one of my favorites classes is linguistic! So a decided to study this linguistic vocab list :)

Day 5: Research idioms in your target language.

I used this post because I realized I still didn’t know any of these idioms.

write/read katakana (FINALLY?? it took me only two 2 weeks to learn hiragana but katakana took me like 2 months??)

setting up my bullet journal for next week ♥️

I've been having a hard time fitting my language studies into my schedule lately. I do study a little bit every day but I feel like I'm not making any progress. japanese is definitely the subject that consumes me the most, it's all so different from what I've known about languages until now... it seems like I'm never gonna get passed the absolute beginner level (no matter how many hours I dedicate to it, I still feel like I haven't done enough).

also, it's been weeks since I stopped studying French by myself (I do learn it in college, but I know only attending my classes isn't enough), and I'm stuck in the B1 level since march.

Day 6: Name some of your favorite blogs and why you love them!
