Functional resistive-based exercises ππ½ that challenge your balance are an important component of an exercise program as you get older ππͺπ½Current laboratory and clinical evidence suggests that aging results in: (1) diverse and nonuniform declines in the morphology and physiological function of the various sensory structures examined, (2) preferential loss of distal large myelinated sensory fibers and receptors, and (3) impaired distal lower-extremity proprioception, vibration and discriminative touch, and balance. Open chain exercises of a bilateral nature, such as 45Β° leg press, whilst safe and effective in enhancing strength and muscle CSA, are generally poor at improving the age-related sensory changes that contribute to worsening balance. Here I also incorporate a quicker more powerful movement which has been shown to translate to better function in older adults. The unilateral dumbbell step-up improves strength, sensory balance capacity & function and is one exercise that can provide great benefit to older trainees. #almost50yo #nevertooold #dontstopmoving #fitness #exercise #training #gym #aging #cycling π΄πΌ #workout #strength #power #strong #muscle #lean #fatloss #weightloss #fit #diet #instafit #instahealth #fitfam #lifestyle (at Muscle & Fitness Gym)
