A masquerade. Sabra had been surprised at the announcement of it, having expected a feast in the Great Hall or something along those lines. The idea of something so enchanting, however, was enough to excite even her, though moments later she realized she didnât exactly have an outfit that screamed masquerade. She could imagine some of the wealthier students dressing extravagantly, and she had some money from working to get a dress, but still... âI doubt Iâll have anything to wear, or at least nothing extraordinarily fancy. Is that a bad thing?â
Sybill turned to the student next to them who asked them the question. âIâm thinking Iâll go as a serial killer, they look just like everybody else,â she answered deadpan before breaking into a goofy grin. âNo, I donât know what my costume might be yet, for once.â
That wasnât a reference to The Sight. It was more boring than that, it was simply that Sybill liked Halloween and planned her costume in advance but this year, theyâve yet to settle on something.
âHave you? Decided on a costume.â
Alice was trying very hard not to scream at the younger students who were running around chatting excitedly about the upcoming masquerade. âThey are so loud, and how are their voices that high?â She mumbled to herself before placing a hand on her forehead. âWhy the hell are they so excited anyway? Theyâre, what? Twelve? Shouldnât they be painting black noses and whiskers on their faces for Halloween?âÂ
âI reckon that we donât have much of a choice in attending that - thing. I could always feign ill, probably a better use of my time,â he muttered to himself under his breath as he walked out of the hall, books perched under his arm. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to place his thoughts in order, though this new addition seemed to throw them for a loop. The last thing he needed - or wanted - at this point in time was to devote his own time to being around someone that wasnât worthy of it. They could prattle on and one about how this was about second glances and seeing past the first impression, but Severus was more than aware of how things truly worked. Heâd stopped just outside the corner of the hall, waiting as the impatient first years passed him so that he wouldnât have to listen to their merciless obnoxious chatter as he walked back to the common room. As he turned to begin on his way, he noticed that he wasnât alone, and his face contorted into an expression of annoyance. âItâs a bit rude to stand there unannounced, donât you think?

Despite her propensity for daydreaming, Pandora didnât find it difficult to focus during classes. Her notes were neat and organized, even color coded with the collection of pastel colored highlighters and markers she kept on the table in front of her-- more for the look of it than the practicality. Towards the end of class, however, her mind wandered just as the professor began reading out the homework assignment for next class. She managed to fill an empty checkbox with the classâ assigned color-- red, in this case-- and left a small smudged line beside it before turning her attention to the next page in her planner. This particular page was already partially covered in leaves and flowers and short quotes, but she beganadding small hearts and more flowers to fill up the page even more. In the corner, she scribbled her initials, sometimes replacing the S for Selwyn with a cursive C.
It wasnât until the din of students bustling from the classroom turned to near silence that she realized she was alone in the classroom, still sitting at her desk with all of her books open. She sat up, alert, and hurriedly threw her pens and quill into her pencil case, closed her books and clutched them to her chest, and stood to fast-walk her way to the door. She didnât have far to go, as she always sat towards the front of the class, and she made it just as the last student to exit the room was just in front of the door.
âOh.. Wait--â she called out to them, not recognizing who they were from the back. âDo excuse me, but did you catch the homework assignment? I mustâve gotten distracted and missed it.â
âYou know how they say like, âyou gotta be a yes manâ, you gotta say yes to stuff to...open yourself up to opportunities and relationships and...whatever. Well I think my new thing is gonna be to say ânoâ to literally everything and then like, nothing will ever happen ever and itâll be the best. Like if you just say no to people, then theoretically, theyâll bugger off. Iâll be a no man and everyone will stop asking me to do stuff, cause theyâll know that Iâd just say no. Perfect.â

Remus was convinced the past few days were making a conscious effort to unnerve him. Severus was an entire issue in himself, then that moment of weakness with James he was still berating himself for -- and now an appearance from the other Slytherin Remus had been doggedly avoiding (though for vastly different reasons), sliding out of his seat at one of the study tables, all hard lines and his strangely familiar brand of cocky posturing that didnât so much suggest better-than-you as state it. The heat rushing to Remusâ face was practically Pavlovian in its immediacy. It wasnât that he thought about kissing Regulus Black often (being kissed by might by more appropriate, heâd been as responsive as statue during the actual act), it was just that every time he saw him the memory of that dark corridor came rushing back in a vivid technicolor Remus would rather not relive.Â
So he wasnât the sort to get suddenly kissed, that was one layer of pathetic to the whole thing and there were several more; the primary one being just how easy the power play had been on Regulusâ part, how effective in terms of stopping Remus in his tracks. There had been a time when Remus had played with the idea of reaching out to the younger Black in some attempt to understand Siriusâ history further, to maybe hopefully bridge the gap between the two siblings when they werenât under the damning gaze of their parents. That had gone out the window in a moment and Remus had done what heâd always found easiest to do -- carried out the task immediately necessary, tucked his tail between his legs and ran. The look of Regulusâ face when heâd fled from the door to the Slytherinâs commons was unforgettable.Â
And not to mention, a large part of why Remus was currently leaning against one of the bookshelves with The Complete Guide to Magical Lawn Pests held in front of his face, staring intently at the word âgnomeâ for the few moments he hoped it would take for Regulus to keep walking and pass him by completely.Â
