Billy moved from California with the sun on his back. He radiated heat, put the flame of desire into anyone, and had a hot-head temper.

It only made sense he would rise with the sun.

Billy wakes up a 6:00 am everyday, no alarm needed. His body just does that. In California, he would sneak out in the early morning, before Neil woke up and before the sun rose. He’d take his board and paddle out to the calm ocean. Sitting alone, he’d watch the sun rise. The warm colors cascading over the glittering water, the light warming his body.

It was peaceful.

The move to Hawkins didn’t change him. He still woke up at 6:00 am. He took a shower, made breakfast for everyone, and still had time to read a bit.

Billy is a light sleeper, always alert for the sound of footsteps outside his door. Always ready to yank on his boots and flee to safety of his car.

Max is a creature of the night. She is hyper-active after 5:30, just after dinner. She’ll watch tv or play her radio loud and dance along. She’d rearrange her whole room just for the hell of it. She’ll finally wear herself out and collapse into bed, dead to the world.

Nothing can drag Max’s ass outta bed before 9. This makes getting to school difficult.

Billy is all ready to go when Max slumps out of her room, hair a mess and dead on her feet. She takes forever to get ready.

By the time she’s done, Billy’s in the car laying on the horn as she comes stumbling out of the house. Always, in her seat, is toaster waffles wrapped in a napkin to stay warm.

Max says nothing and neither does Billy.

When Billy died, Max couldn’t sleep.

She lies awake, staring up at the ceiling, trying to imagine he’s there, that he’s right next door, on the other side of the wall.

She used to knock on the wall, just to reach out and make sure he’s still there.

He always knocked back.

Max turns in her bed, tear slipping down her cheek and knocks softly on the wall.
