Not pointing fingers at Joseph but a pair of his glasses are on the dashboard of the truck you take in both endings and I always wondered if that was supposed to be a hint that that was his truck, and if so I thought it might be possible he could have Only You set to play on it as a fail safe. Even so, it doesnât really fit his character in my opinion? I like your idea of it being Jacobâs last stand or something! Hadnât thought of that exactly before!
Ooh I like that. Those sunglasses must cling like hell to that fuckinâ dashboard lol, I never noticed them!
But even soâI think it does and doesnât fit him. Heâs clearly vicious, this is known. Heâs clearly not above murderâor indirectly encouraging murder. But when we see him do this in the game, itâs after he feels heâs been threatened and that the safety of the Project is at risk.
Him being the one to (somehow) play Only You at the Deputy in the Walk Away ending does not fit with this behavior pattern, so I wonder at the differences in the endings, I suppose. He has more reason to kill you if you Resist than he would if you walked away, you would think. He even tells you in the bunker ending that he should kill youâbut he wonât. Youâre his family now. So I think I need to backtrack a bit and pull apart whatâs key there: heâd kill you, but he canât, because youâre family.
Whatâs important to Joseph? Family. Having someone, anyone, besides himself.
(This is me wishing we could have seen the GFH being taken, or how over time theyâd stop responding to our calls, and then drop away completely, because they were being pulled over to Josephâs compound but whatever, Ubisoft, itâs fine)
Josephâs final eulogy always ends with the same threat: âyou took my family so that I could have yours.â Again, his viciousness is wrapped up in a singular purpose: having, and protecting, a family. He turns all (sort ofâsorry, Sharky) your friends against you, and you have a choice: fight him, or walk away with your comrades. If you walk away, you leave him with the family heâs now assembled, made up of the Guns for Hire or the friendly NPCs who helped you out around Hope County. You walk away, so now he has what he wants.
(Though he was also adamant, if not hellbent to have the Deputy stop what they were doing, to let them know they could turn back and be forgivenâand I think thatâs exactly what Joseph wanted from you. He wanted you to learn and walk away. To not solve yet another problem with a bullet. He wanted you to know that you, too, could be forgiven. Thatâs why he is at his most vicious when youâre in the bunker with himâyet again you tried to solve a problem with violence. Yet again you chose to fight [never mind that he gave you a reason to do so, so lol howâs that hypocrisy feel, Joseph?].)
Personally I still think itâs a coincidence that the song plays when it does (especially since itâs part of the normal radioâs playlist anyway). Josephâs glasses in the truck could just be a visual nod to him constantly saying âGod is watchingââitâs could make us think oh, is this being âwatched,â too? And since Watchers are also the name of a sort of angel, and people who OD on Bliss become AngelsâIâm talking in circles here.
Occamâs Razor would probably say what you say: that was Josephâs truck, he probably had one station on loop so it would always play just in case you took that truck. Iâm not saying itâs not likely, I just like the way my tinfoil hat theories fit better.
Plus that whole failsafe of his woulda fallen through if Whitehorse walked to a different truck lol
