Sova, a respected artist who previously released music and performed under real name Sophia Vastek, is now embarking on a new creative journey with her new moniker and upcoming album, Alight!, out September 4th via Hout Records.
Throughout, the album builds up a warm backdrop of building instrumentation and subtle distortion along with taut neoclassical composition and impeccable piano playing.
The act of taking on a new name is portentous, signifying a departure from what’s past, while also preserving honored ties to legacy and family.
The music extends and broadens to new horizons, and features contributions from a clutch of noteworthy fellow travellers: Spencer Zahn (fretless bass guitar), Clarice Jensen (cello), Evan Chapman (drums & electronics), Max Yassky (drums), and Sam Torres (saxophone and more). The album was also mixed by Chuck Johnson.
“Quarry” is baroque and whirring. Warm woodwinds crest over a tightly wound piano motif.
Having previous releases on OPIA, the label founded by Ă“lafur Arnalds, fans of his should definitely take note.
