Sci-Fi AU where Adam works shifts in a small diner to save money for college, and when he's driving home one day, he sees something like a star fall from the sky. He follows its path and finds a crashed space ship with humanoid alien Michael injured inside.
Michael has been fighting a raging battle against his evil brother, Lucifer, but his craft was hit by a blast which knocked him unconscious and sent him hurtling down to the planet Earth. Earth is considered a backwards planet, too primitive and innocent to be concerned with the galactic war. Michael is belligerent and angry that he can't repair his craft with the technologies at his disposal, but he's also badly hurt and woozy and almost collapses into Adam's arms.
Adam decides to help Michael and take him home. He nurses Michael back to health and Michael begins to see that his own views about humans were wrong, as was his sense of superiority. Adam is brave and smart, and also kind. Michael begins to develop feelings for him, but he's torn knowing that in his absence Lucifer may conquer the galaxy.
With Adam's help he creates a machine to send a signal into space in the hopes that his troops will pick it up and send a ship to rescue him. Michael asks Adam to come with him, but Adam is frightened by the prospect of leaving behind everything he's ever known. They sleep together, knowing that once Michael's ship arrives, they will never see each other again.
Then, a ship does arrive, but it's not one of Michael's. It's one of Lucifer's and he is determined to finish the war once and for all. He takes the town hostage and taunts Michael to come out and face him, threatening to kill one human every hour until Michael faces him.
And the first human who's life he threatens is Adam.
