“Marry me.”

The words falling off his lover’s lips made Arthur look up from his meal, jaw ceasing mid-chew. “Excuse me?” he asked, a bit shocked.

The American was smiling, his expression an adoring one, but it slowly turned to uncertainty and uneasiness. “I just... I well- I would like to ask for your hand in marriage,” he stuttered.

Green eyes were piercing his gaze, and Alfred looked down sheepishly. Maybe this hadn’t been a good idea..? Well, Alfred had taken all the best steps, from watching Monty Python together to preparing Arthur’s favorite meal from scratch; everything done with absolute care. But... what if the man didn’t want to take that step yet? He’d understand, but then again, it’s not like Alfred wanted to make things uncomfortable for his beloved.

Jones panicked and fumbled around his pocket before pulling out a small box and opening it, setting it in the middle of the table. Oh, it was beautiful, a tungsten band with inlaid diamonds, something he knew Arthur would love.

The latter set his fork and knife down delicately, silverware hardly making a sound as it was set down, only a soft clink. This action only increased his lover’s anxieties. Arthur took a deep breath and a small smile shown through his near-perfect cool demeanor. “Yes,” he simply stated.

Alfred blinked in surprise, but a huge grin placed itself on his face. “Yes?” he asked again for confirmation.

“Yes!” Arthur was laughing now, holding his hands up to his mouth, feeling so very embarrassed for reacting in such a giddy way.

He quickly found himself wrapped up in a hug, Alfred was near squeezing the life out of him, pressing kisses to his lips and face, anywhere he could kiss was fair game. By the time the excitement died down, the two of them were standing up in a gentle and warm embrace, on the verge of tears. “I love you,” Arthur whispered.

That jazzy beat played throughout the room and Alfred couldn’t help but snap his fingers along to the rhythm. Soon, his feet joined the mix and he was doing a funny little dance that many had grown to love in his nation, very popular among his young people. He looked to his companion and grinned. “Wanna dance?” he said, holding a hand out to the man standing huffily by.

Arthur, that was his name, just stared at him with confusion. “Are you serious?”

“Of course!” Alfred stated jubilantly, spinning around to show his excitement. “Or is it that Englishmen can’t dance in a new way? Still stuck in the 1900′s, huh?”

Arthur looked mightily offended by that statement. “Don’t you act all high and mighty. This new age music is honestly so confusing. Jazz? I thought the 1920′s would have something better to offer than these silly dances.”

“C’mon, baby,” Alfred pleaded.

Kirkland sighed and grabbed Alfred’s hand. “Show me what to do,” the Briton mumbled.

“Alright,” Alfred smiled, “The Charleston is my favorite.”

The American backed up to show his lover the dance, only to be laughed at in turn. “All you’re doing is flailing your limbs about, how is that a dance?” Arthur snorted.

“Well,” Alfred said, slightly out of breath. “It’s something my people made up, you wouldn’t laugh if you knew how difficult it was.”

“Oh it can’t be that hard-”

“Try it,” Alfred smirked.

Arthur sighed in defeat and backed up a bit, poising himself, analyzing the tempo of the music. He tapped his foot along until he began the dance, practically replicating it, each step and placement with precision. Alfred stared at him, slack-jawed. 

Alfred watched Arthur and his flustered expression, he was so obviously embarrassed, so instead of making him endure it, Alfred joined in. They laughed together and continued their silly dance together.

Alfred runs for Arthur, mind spinning with a whirlwind of thoughts. Arthur just got hurt, was he okay, what if something happened?? There were so many things that could go wrong with this, especially during war. He spots Arthur a couple hundred feet away and makes a mad dash for him, tears in his eyes. Arthur could be dead, oh god, where was god? Where was he in this merciless place? These godforsaken trenches filled with dirt and muck.

Alfred practically slides to Arthur who is on the ground breathing heavily, face twisted in pure agony. “Arthur,” he whimpers, “Arthur, are you okay??”

The latter nods weakly, motioning to the shrapnel embedded into his leg, but it was nothing serious enough to warrant amputation.Arthur tries his best to muster a smile to put Alfred at ease. “It’s fine, just get me somewhere safer,” he replies.

“No where is ‘safer’” Alfred mumbles, looking around at the chaos among them. He looks back down at Arthur before scooping him up in his arms. “I almost lost you,” he whispers, holding his lover and fellow soldier close.

“I’m still here,” Arthur remarks, looping his arms around the man’s neck. “I’ll always be here, don’t worry. We won’t die today.”

“Today,” Alfred repeats helplessly.
