First 2 images from Alert Bay; then sketch from the Jungen show. Our BC adventure took us to the community of Alert Bay - on a small island off the NE shore of Vancouver Island. I found the place amazing: the First Nations community’s resistance to the potlatch ban; how they have fought for the ongoing vitality of their culture. The totem pole is from a site with quite a number of poles, both standing and on the ground. The site is treated as sacred, honouring their ancestors, and visitors can only view from the perimeter. • The bear mask is from their cultural centre, which is not a museum, for the masks continue to be worn at certain times. The labels on the regalia would describe the date of making etc, like a museum would, but then mentions who in the community owns or wears that item. I felt a real sense of living continuity. • Then the Brian Jungen mask, made from Nike Air Jordans.
