Fue diseñado y construido por Rowland Mason Ordish en 1873 como una modificación de puente atirantado, que resultó ser estructuralmente errónea, por lo que entre 1884 y 1887 sir Joseph Bazalgette incorporó algunos de los elementos de diseño de un puente colgante.
