On This Day In History
April 16th, 1943: Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann accidentally discovers the hallucinogenic effects of LSD.
Through my LSD experience and my new picture of reality, I became aware of the wonder of creation, the magnificence of nature and of the animal and plant kingdom. I became very sensitive to what will happen to all this and all of us.
-Albert Hofmann
LSD burst over the dreary domain of the constipated bourgeoisie like the angelic herald of a new psychedelic millennium. We have never been the same since, nor will we ever be, for LSD demonstrated, even to skeptics, that the mansions of heaven and gardens of paradise lie within each and all of us.
-Terence McKenna
In the beginning we were creating our music, ourselves, every night ... starting with a few outlines, maybe a few words for a song. Sometimes we worked out in Venice, looking at the surf. We were together a lot and it was good times for all of us. Acid, sun, friends, the ocean, and poetry and music.
-Jim Morrison
On April 16, 1943, Swiss chemist Dr. Albert Hofmann first discovered the potent effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) through unintentional exposure at the Sandoz laboratory in Basel, Switzerland where he was researching the medicinal properties of lysergic acid compounds. This accidental discovery came three days before his first intentional LSD experience, which is now known as Bicycle Day.
In his journal, he wrote:
"Last Friday, April 16, 1943, I was forced to interrupt my work in the laboratory in the middle of the afternoon and proceed home, being affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant, intoxicated-like condition characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination.
"In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some hours this condition faded away."
Albert Hoffman was the cool dude scientist who created this lil scientific mixin of chemicals that makes you blast off into the universes of your mind called l$d.

Happy 80th Anniversary of Dr. Albert Hofmann’s Bicycle Day.
"It gave me an inner joy, an open-mindedness, a gratefulness, open eyes and an internal sensitivity for the miracles of creation…. I think that in human evolution it has never been as necessary to have this substance, LSD. It is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be.” -Dr. Albert Hofmann (On his 100th birthday in 2006)
