Season 7 : Episode #166 : Serious Sailing between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands Hello Friends, On this weeks episode we start our day on the hook at Santa Cruz Island after a very rolly night in the anchorage of Morse Point. We decided to do our first (non- emergency) sail off of anchor given there large open anchorage we were in and the good steady winds. We tied the first reef in the mainsail and Camille worked the boat towards the anchor, powering up the main then goin into irons so I could easily haul the the anchor as we would have if we had the motor on. It went perfectly and was a lot of fun. We instantly realized that we needed to tie our 2nd reef in as the boat was already over powered in the protected bay. Once out into the channel we had a very lively and fun sail across the channel and tacking up the southern coast of Santa Rosa to the anchorage of Johnson's Lee
Season 7 : Episode #147 : Enjoying the anchorage at Cat Harbor Hello Friends, After Camille and Mister Steady's hike on the Trans-Catalina Trail she was ready for some food prepared by someone else (and steady was ready for a long nap). We made our way ashore with the help of our new to us 1973 Johnson 2-stroke outboard (who served us brilliantly the entire time we were on the island). This is the first trip we have ever done with a "reliable" outboard for the dinghy and boy what a dream it is!!!! After enjoying some grub at Two Harbors we made our way back to Triteia while watching lots of "Mullet" fish jumping out of the water. As the sun was setting an older gentleman in a small sailboat came sailing slowly into the bay. We chatted boat to boat as he sailed and made his way up near the dinghy dock and anchored!Â

Replacing the Forward Hatch with a Lewmar Ocean Series 65 on an Alberg 30 - Part 1
-
Hello Friends, This is the first part in a series of videos showing you how I replaced our original forward hatch with a  Lewmar Ocean Series 65 hatch. Our original forward hatch was very bad at keeping the sea out and the frame had rotted to the point of no longer supporting the hinges so it was time to deal with this problem. I decided to replace the hatch with a serious ocean going hatch that I new I could trust when we are doing ocean passages and large seas tear across the deck. There was really only one choice for me, a Lewmar Ocean Series 65. I went with the trapezoid shape to keep the same look as the original and I picked mine up on eBay for 95 dollars. The lens has crazing but me and Camille were not concerned with this and it can easily be replaced later on. On this episode I mark the position of the new base and cut out the hole for the new slightly larger hatch. Prop'ed near the rocks while hauling up the anchor Catalina Island Season 4 | Episode 81 | Sailing off the anchor and diving on the prop near Catalina Island
On this episode we haul up the anchor at Button Shell Beach so we can make our way to a new, hopefully friendlier, anchorage further North.
While we were fighting to haul up the 80lbs of 3/8 chain and 35lb anchor in 70 ft of water our long painter line found its way into our propeller and "Prop'ed" us leaving us with no engine, an anchor that was half way up after a hard struggle very near to the rocks.
We hoisted the sails and sailed away from land with the light breeze that was coming off the island and made our way to deeper water to finish hauling up the anchor.
Watch the episode to see Camille dive on the prop and get us back under way as we find a new incredible anchorage near Little Gibraltar.
There is also a new episode of A Stern View Podcast up where we talk about our experiences at Button Shell Beach....Find that on our website or on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts !

Season 4 | Episode 80 | Exploring underwater at Button Shell Beach
On this episode we awake after a peaceful night on the hook in 70ft of water and have a nice slow morning in the typical California Marine Layer skies.
Once the sun showed up to work I got our scuba gear together while Camille sunbathed as naked as she could with all the crowds around this busy anchorage.
We surface swam to Long Point before dropping down and enjoying a nice dive with Lobsters, Garibaldi, a Spanish Shawl and a VERY large shark we actually didn't see until we were editing the video! Ya never know what is watching you down there!
Next weeks episode is full of adventure as we haul up and make our way to the next anchorage!

just hang on....Â
S/V Triteia - 1965 Alberg 30
I am very happy to announce that I have finally found MY boat ! She is a 1965 Alberg 30 and is tied up in Wilmington, CA.Â
I have been looking for a boat for as long as I can remember and seriously shopping for a boat for the last year. The more I researched the more I knew that there were a number of things I would not comprise on in regards to finding the boat that will take me around the world. - Pre - 1972 (classic plastic) - Full Keel (I did seriously consider a Tartan 34 with centerboard) - Keel Slung Rudder (or Skeg Rudder) - Encapsulated Keel - Inboard motor (preferably diesel) - Built in head Things I preferred but was willing to be flexible on were. - Tiller - stove - minimal modifications - built in water tank A friend gave me that book “Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere” and I read it cover to cover time and time again. The boats I narrowed it down to were. Alberg 35, Tartan 34, Alberg 30, Westsail 32, Pearson Triton 27, and a few others. I very nearly bought a Roughwater Cutter in San Francisco but luckily didn't pull the trigger on it.Â
But one day during my routine searching of all craigslist on the west coast I came across the Alberg 30 I would end up buying. It was going for a steal because the engine is seized (since then i have discovered its not actually seized) and the owner just wanted to offload it.Â
After inspecting the mast support beam, the chainplates, the hull deck connections, the standing rigging, the thru-hulls we went to the marina office to see about transferring the slip into my name and continued on with the sale. I was the proud owner of a beautiful boat and one with a proven track record for blue water passage making. In my coming posts I will share photos and videos of me going through the boat making repairs and upgrades and taking her on adventures here in Southern California.... Â
(here are some sneak peeks)Â
5+ years of growth on the bottom... no small jobÂ
