Okay but why not AkoIo? Hear me out, here.
- Akoya knowing how much it turns Io on to have money lavished on him and exploiting this ruthlessly.
- And Io kind of feeling like a heel because he knows at first that Akoya's feelings for him are a lot stronger than his are for Akoya and he feels kind of guilty like he's just using the guy for his money.
- But Akoya looks so sad when Io tries to turn him down and somehow he can't seem to stop.
- Like seriously one time Akoya withdrew a few billion in cash and jewelry from his bank just so they could make love on a heap of coins and gems like some kind of dragon and it was amazing.
- And somewhere deep down Akoya clings to Io because he feels like there is one standard Io judges him by, and it won't matter to Io if he has a funny name or if his skin breaks out or he has a bad hair day or spills soup down his white uniform, as long as he has enough zeroes in his bank account Io will always be there for him.
- Then one day he lets this slip to Io and Io's like, "wtf no. I like you as a person, I enjoy being with you, it doesn't matter how much money you have."
- And it's true.
- And gradually Io starts realizing just how emotionally vulnerable Akoya is beneath all his airs and polish, and how hard he finds it to open up and connect to other people. Io knows how it feels, and he starts opening up more around Akoya to try to help him feel more comfortable around him.
- Gradually some of the things that used to bug Io about Akoya start making sense. Like, he used to think that Akoya was wasteful, the way he throws money away on clothes and jewelry and other trinkets. But after a while, he starts to realize how much Akoya enjoys these things. Whether he's spending thousands on a diamond tennis bracelet or a couple of bucks on a box of macarons, he takes such genuine pleasure in the beautiful things he surrounds himself with that it's hard to say he's wasting his money. Io starts gradually rethinking his definition of "value", and starts drifting away from the need to have money just to have it, and focusing more instead on having worthwhile experiences.
- The first time he buys Akoya an expensive gift it is really such a big deal, not just because it's an expensive gift but because he put so much thought and effort into finding exactly the right thing.
- But after a while they both loosen up a bit and start doing simple things like just going window shopping without buying anything or sitting and reading together quietly, because they don't need to impress each other so much anymore.
- And at first Ryuu is kind of "ADLAKDFLAFDJKAS!!!!" about the whole thing because he totally does not trust Akoya's motives. But after a while he starts to become more supportive because he can see that it's making Io AND Akoya happier and more at peace with themselves, and Ryuu just can't find fault with that. So instead he amuses himself by teasing Akoya a lot ("You better bring him home before curfew, young man!") but he's really happy for both of them.
- And they are happy.
- Io still wants to do the dragon thing again, though.

"Naruko-kun?"

Io looked up briefly from the book he'd been studying to glance at Akoya. The two of them were in the school library, studying for a test together. Io had suggested that Ryuu come too, but he had begged off, citing a date and also a disinclination to spend more time with Akoya than necessary, especially if it involved studying at the same time. Io hadn't minded as much as he might have. Ryuu was his best friend, and Io enjoyed his company, but he wasn't the most restful companion when you were trying to study. Akoya, by contrast, was quiet and focused, and always willing to make himself useful if Io was having difficulties.
Not looking up from his work, Akoya asked, "Have you ever been sorry I wasn't born a girl?"
"No," said Io, bemused, "I can't say the thought has ever crossed my mind." "Really?" said Akoya. "I'm a bit surprised. It seems like something you should have thought of."
"Why is that?" Io asked. It wasn't that he hadn't recognized that Akoya was in touch with his feminine side. He just didn't see what it had to do with him. If Akoya liked makeup and jewelry and perfume and pretty clothes, well, it was his money, and he could spend it on whatever he liked.
"Well," said Akoya, "if I had been a girl, then you could marry me someday. Then you'd gain control of the family fortune. You could run the company, and I could manage your social obligations and manage the household and generally make myself beautiful and companionable for you. I think it would work very well."
Io turned that picture over in his mind.
"Now that you mention it, it does sound nice," he admitted.
Akoya peered at him over the edge of his book and flashed an impish smile. "If you like," he said, "we could do it anyway."
